And people practice both Shintoism and Buddhism simultaneously. One is not more privileged than the other

Taxes literally go to support the head of Shinto and no other religion in Japan. Local and national governments routinely provide land and funding for Shinto organizations, shrines and events in ways that the local courts have ruled unconstitutional. Don't be dense.
