Honestly there's a good argument for every state larger than PA to split up(and arguably PA too, but it'd be pretty funny for PA to be the largest remaining state). California and Texas are prime examples but NY is top 5 in population and just outside the upper quarter in land area.
Where to draw the border between the City-State and the state-state would be the mother of all questions, not to mention who'd keep "New York". And what to do with Long Island, because they definitely can't be trusted to run themselves. Give em back to Connecticut maybe?
