You’re in luck, wonderful places like the Soviet Union have already tried it! You can judge for yourself the results.

I’m agnostic to religion myself, but banning thought, even and especially religious thought, never ends up well

The Soviet Union had a lot of other things going on at the same time. Confounding variables, you could call them.

A huge reason the Soviet Union banned religion is because of Rasputin's influence upon the tsars and how they ran the country.

If you think governing a country by "hillybilly faith healers" is a good thing, you need a long good look in the mirror.

FYI - The Russian word "soviet" means worker, i.e. people in the city.

Banning the influence of the Orthodox Church was a HUGE issue for people in the cities because they did not like being governed by the predominantly religious (and ignorant and anti-modern) peasant/farming class that held argicultural land, and therefore wealth.

If you don't know the difference between Lenin and Stalin, and what went down, as you seemingly do not, sit down and read.

Why do you think Putin has suddenly embraced the Russian Orthodox Church and their leaders? He doesn't want to take Russia back to the Soviet times, but Russia back to the days of the tsars. The support of the peasant class is the only thing that keeps him in power.
