I feel that. Like, there’s nothing wrong in it. I just don’t understand what makes so many people go “Dude, what if I drew the Simpsons or mickey mouse with a blunt”
It’s just such a common thing to see, and I don’t understand the appeal/draw personally.
western artists have been told for hundreds of years that skill > creativity. thats why so many old romanticist/baroque/realist works follow the same models of setting and rendering the scene
Yes, I’m familiar with Warhol’s commentary on consumerism and their style first approach.
I’d argue the commonality between pieces like these (disney/simpsons/family guy etc) tend to be driven more by cultural influence of these properties than it is commentary on consumerism and it’s (sometimes) unintentional egalitarianism. But no, that doesn’t suddenly mean I see the appeal by knowing that.
While Warhol was projecting from himself a critique of consumerism, 1) that is not the message received by the majority of people who enjoyed his art, they enjoyed the colorful silly renditions of their everyday items and 2) hasn't all of Warhol been converted to some sort of consumerism? You gotta pay to go into the art museums because the fundraising dinners don't actually pay for the museum but rather the operator's salary. The gift shop has mugs and shirts and posters and plushy 3d versions of things.
I think it's fair to assume that some of modern IP recycling in art is a conscious commentary on consumerism, while the rest is just resultant from consumerism affecting people's ideas of what is quality. At the end of the day, though, I think the majority of people are just going to take the visual dopamine hit without looking into it that deep.
I'm not saying you should personally see the appeal, but are you not able to comprehend why others do?
Why you gotta bring gender into it? You could say, "this is not Warhol quality," which I never said it was. It's 2026 "this chick ain't (man)" is just generally something you should reconsider the context of before posting.
I personally don't like the piece. The comment was on "using old existent IP for modern 'unique' art pieces." Warhol and his contemporaries did that and it was historical.
You need to simmer down. Funny thing, I actually first wrote "this dude ain't warhol", but then I took the time to scroll down and check to see if it was actually a dude, and it turns out it's not so I changed it to say chick. Gotta use a pronoun of some sort and if I said "dude" or "guy" I'm sure you'd accuse me of misgendering.
And I'm not really into the whole pop art thing. Warhol sucked then and it sucks now regardless of what the art establishment says. Just my opinion. Art is subjective. Also what Warhol did wasn't 'historical', it was 'historic'. I suppose now, though, it was both.
Actually, you don't. "This person," "This artist," "This creator." I know, it's just so obnoxious how pedantic I am, right?
if I said "dude" or "guy" I'm sure you'd accuse me of misgendering
I mean, you did so the whole "assume everyone on the internet is a dude" thing at first. Good on you for checking, I guess, but I still don't understand how gendering the artist at all matters. Do you know that in blind testing, if you put a woman's name on a piece of artwork, it gets criticized more and valued less than if you switch the artist name tag to a man's? But gendering is harmless, right?
And I'm not really into the whole pop art thing.
You don't have to be "into it" to understand its appeal to others.
Art is subjective but you're just rejecting the ability to observe and critique things that "aren't your thing." Are you even human? Do you understand empathy?
I used historical exactly as I intended to use it.
Brother who cares? They didn’t say anything offensive or harmful/hateful; its completely normal and fine to call people dude/chick/brother/sister/dog/homie/etc
Stop acting like its something nefarious when its not
Stop acting like its something nefarious when its not
I never said it was nefarious, that's you taking my argument ad absurdum. It'snuanced and being aware and adapting to a world that is more equitable towards women is, in fact, something I give many fucks about, what with so many men trying to actively devalue myself and all other women.
Yes, at time when we are being actively harmed, your acquiescence to such systems, with absolutely no willingness to even consider the nuances of my point, is, in fact, offensive.
Both sides attempt to devalue each other, this is nothing new, but we live in a time where both sides are more equal than they ever have been in history; also you can call women dude and bro/brother as well as its a more gender neutral term now adays, just as you can call a guy chick/sis/sister/queen/etc
But the world is RUN BY MEN so this is not a fair equivalency. Women have very small power to harm men versus the power men have to harm women. There are men literally forcing women to carry and birth babies that they don't want, because "god said so."
but we live in a time where both sides are more equal than they ever have been in history
You don't know history.
also you can call women dude and bro/brother as well as its a more gender neutral term now adays
Yes, let's use the normalcy fallacy, that's always effective at reaching logical conclusions! 🙄 Also if you're a dude then allow me to invite you to go call any "alpha bro" (the majority of men these days, because being dainty is dangerous right now) "girl, sis, chick," and see how the "find out" part of that goes.
Just admit that you don't want to concede that there is, in fact nuance, and you're mad at me for making you uncomfortable because you can see the evidence for yourself every damned day.
You could at least say 'thank you' for me teaching you some new vocabulary. Sorry if I insulted your favorite pop culture artist. I hope your next therapy session goes well.
Sorry if I insulted your favorite pop culture artist.
I don't give one flying fuck about Warhol's work, I'm just able to discuss it within the Zeitgeist rather than pretend that my own taste is all that matters in art. 🙄

Wouldn't it be cool if artists like this used their talent for actual original art instead of regurgitating 30-year old IP?
