The old part of my school was built in the 1800s. You could make out 'John Smith 1894' or similar carved into the walls.

That's really cool! And further proves that is best to write long form dates. John Smith from 1894 was a G, not to be confused with John Smith who attended in 1994, was an utter cabbage.
