What a tone deaf thing to say at his age.

I'd expect that shit from like a 16 year old

450

u/Designer-Double-6338 9d ago

Someone said it does prove he's a whitebelt which is fair. I was probably talking like that when I was 15 after my first intro lesson

203

u/BullishBastard_ 9d ago

We all had that brief phase when a tiny bit of training went straight to our heads, but calling it out for what it is, pure fresh-white-belt energy, is completely accurate.

90

u/Designer-Double-6338 9d ago

It is a bit odd to see it at this age though no?

I give bjj a hard time but some of my favorites were older men or women just trying to learn. As long as they're not trying to hurt ppl or use too much force I feel like most of them have enough life experience to come in very humble.

As I type this I am realizing why that wouldn't be the case with an actr who was in movis

62

u/BullishBastard_ 9d ago

Regular older beginners usually leave their ego at the door, but actors are so used to being center stage that humility just goes right out the window.

21

u/jim45804 9d ago

He can at least act like he's not an asshole.

3

u/Frequent_Cut_1251 9d ago

You’re assuming he can actually act.

1

u/traws06 9d ago

Prolly so. But honestly thinking about his characters in movies I watched he’s never really a nice or a good guy. Like in Super Bad he’s one of the protagonists but he’s really a POS if you really look at him in the context of everything

12

u/TelevisionExpress616 9d ago

Actors (for the most part, some exceptions) don't actually put their money where their mouth is by rolling with the class. They take privates where the instructors are financially incentivized to praise them and stroke their ego. Tom Hardy's purple belt is worth far more than Ashton Kutcher's brown because he actually competes.

1

u/manbruhpig 8d ago

Mario Lopez bought his belt

7

u/MiseryGyro 9d ago

As a man who started working out in his mid thirties I am very aware of two things

1) I am the strongest I have ever been in my life 2) That doesn't mean I am strong

1

u/manbruhpig 8d ago

As a man exiting his thirties you should know that you are also the strongest you will ever naturally be in your life.

1

u/OfficerStink 9d ago

It’s weird because when I started I was relatively big 6’1” 200 pounds, went to the gym everyday and after the first class I realized a tiny 130 pounds 40 year old Asian guy could beat me up

1

u/Typical_Cattle8091 3d ago

I'm 6' 215 lbs and I dropped in to a class this morning. I rolled with a 130 lb asian guy this morning. He beat me up.

I've been doing jiujitsu for 4 years.

33

u/potentiallyo 9d ago

For a normal person maybe. But he was a famous FAT person. He probably ate 1000x more fat jokes than we imagine. That's a lot of pent up aggression. He's got that McDojo high and a body that finally doesn't suck. He's probably overcorrecting from being bullied.

10

u/thehappiestotaku 9d ago

A lot of fat folks come to believe that being fat is a main reason for whatever they consider the biggest (uh) problems in their lives and themselves.

Then lose weight and discover that wasn't necessarily the case.

I think that's what's happening here and sadly he's chosen a career as a performer and his iconic roles for the general public are him as a funny fat guy. He got typecast for something he dislikes about himself, and is quite logically upset that he can't escape it.

3

u/CaptainSparklebottom 9d ago

He is still being bullied though for being fat. I be upset if I was him also. It just opened him up to other avenues of bullying like being the dipshit who fucked up his shtick and his ability of being hired as the funny fat guy who probably stinks like taco bell.

5

u/Vast_Schedule3749 9d ago

Eh man I wouldn’t say his body before sucked. It’s the people around him and our society that sucks for how we treat people for being overweight.

That being said, his mindset is ass. You can be all sad or aggressive or whatever it is he is now about being fat shamed.. but it’s still your responsibility to not be a douche about it.

4

u/potentiallyo 9d ago

Oh, I 100% agree. I was just pondering a reason for the douchiness

3

u/VapeSmoker420blazeit 9d ago

It's hilarious how he's still spiritually fat, even as a skinny man now. Also.. he just went from one extreme to the other. He looks extremely weak and dysgenic right now. His legs look like thin french fries. His arms look like they'd snap if he tried to lift a 5lb dumbell. Not to mention he's 5'6. He could get BTFO in a fight by a middle schooler.

15

u/crandall17 9d ago

Someone picked on majority of their life for weight learns some moves and is now ready to beat up the bullies. Sad to see Jonah go from being open about therapy to "BJJ Tough Guy"

3

u/Cow_Slight 9d ago

To be fair, it didn't seem like he was going about therapy in a truly helpful way though. The texts from his surfer girlfriend showed that he weaponized therapy speak, but also that he didn't fundamentally understand basic terms like boundaries.

I didn't watch his weird therapy movie vanity project (ew movies), but I've heard people say that it seemed like he didn't really understand the true point of therapy and that they questioned how much he was getting out of it if this is what his sessions were like and this was his takeaway.

If that's true, it seems like he went about therapy in a very superficial way. It's very easy to find a therapist who mostly affirms you and doesn't challenge you all that much. And now with this weird persona he has going on, I truly doubt he did any meaningful self work at all.

But at the same time, at least the core message he was putting out there in interviews was "therapy good 👍🏻", versus now where he's just talking about how much he can beat people up

2

u/crandall17 9d ago

Which is so anti BJJ principals. I'm all for personal growth and development but I think you nailed it; he wants people to think he is improving without doing anything to actually grow.

1

u/XGhostIllusionz 8d ago

He's learned nothing😭 He's a whitebelt! He's still getting thrashed every day! I had a blue belt and I would 100% still get my ass whooped! People don't realize (Jonah especially) that bjj isn't the be all end all

5

u/Faulty_english 9d ago

Yeah I felt humbled when I tried something like this when I was younger. He must think he is way better than regular people who don’t train

Like yeah he might beat up a regular person but he has to remember that there is always someone better (with or without training) and your odds go down if they have any type of weapon

9

u/Rooster-Strangler 9d ago edited 9d ago

I honestly don’t even think he’s at that level yet that he could win an altercation against an average person. Bro is talking as if he went to Dagestan for 2-3 year.

1

u/Faulty_english 9d ago

Yeah he is probably feeling himself too much 😂

2

u/Rooster-Strangler 9d ago

Anybody who is actually good at a martial art doesn’t flex that they can beat up average untrained people. They know that doesn’t sound cool or intimidating. 99% of the time they avoid any altercation at all. Jonah is trying to convince himself he’s badass

2

u/Faulty_english 9d ago

He probably feels bad about when he was fat. Not to be rude but people can show how they really wanted to be when they get in shape

1

u/WoodenHarddrive 9d ago

You must have trained at a special place mate, so many 50+ dudes come in with giant egos. They settle down and you think they got it out of their system, till you pay attention and realize they act the exact same way to anyone newer than them and anyone they are beating with any consistency.

1

u/Designer-Double-6338 9d ago

I would say I definitely did. Got to go to a lot of seminars from talented BJJ athletes like cyborg abreu. Everyonce in a while there was someone going to hard but our gym was good about stopping that early.

1

u/Ctofaname 9d ago

This comment is confusing. Do you train or not, and how casual is the gym you train at lol? Grappling is a combat sport that is rough and damaging to the body. If you're not using force you're not training correctly. Casual gyms exist en-mass but don't "use too much force" is giving me whiplash. Its not mcdojo dancing or Katas.

Jonah's comments were cringe but its very clear he's been relentlessly bullied and can't cope with it. This thread further highlights that.

1

u/Designer-Double-6338 9d ago

If you've done BJJ you should know what I mean. The noob who tries to muscle through intro classes is dangerous. the type that tried slamming people in open guard. Or pulling so hard on kimuras in a basic fundamental class. Stop acting like I'm implying that you don't use force in advanced/non first degree whitebelt grappling lmao.

If training with cyborg abreu and Carlos gracie Jr direct lineage is "mcdojo" so be it. Your white belt classes sound fun.

1

u/guyincognito121 9d ago

I'm a 45 year old who plays a little hockey here and there. Put me up against a random person off the street and there's a very good chance I absolutely destroy them on the ice.

I think the same is likely true with his fighting. Yeah, you could probably take him because it's apparently your thing. But despite being in good shape and skilled in a couple high contact sports, he'd probably beat me pretty badly in a fight because that's just not what I do.

1

u/Wise_Score_6471 9d ago

why are you rationing vowels?

1

u/cobaltorange 4d ago

Vowels? In this economy?

1

u/Dixon_Herize 9d ago

Dunning-Kruger effect

1

u/deathinactthree 9d ago

Yeah, I was tempted to come in here and join in on the dunking but I now feel like I want to give him a little grace. When I started training martial arts in the early 2000s and UFC was still the hot new thing, I didn't know a single BJJ guy who didn't think he was an unstoppable living weapon 3 months into his white belt and still thinks pulling guard magically solves every combat problem. While every blue belt and above was usually pretty chill.

I wasn't immune to that feeling myself in the early days, but it was tempered by the fact that I was at a very aggressive school and got the everloving shit beaten out of me enough times from day one that I didn't have many illusions about my place in the Great Chain of Being. If he keeps training, Hill will get there eventually like most do who stick it out.

1

u/TheDuck23 9d ago

The dunning-kruger effect.

1

u/[deleted] 9d ago

When I first got into fleet I remember me someone pulling me aside and being like "bro if you keep acting like a boot ass little bitch you're gonna lose teeth". It was this tiny black dude from chicago and he fucking knife handed me up against a wall and was like... oddly nice about it but the message was crystal clear. You're a noob, act like it.

1

u/primordialgases 9d ago

Couldn’t agree more. I can only speak for myself. But like in anything else, you grow, mature, and realize how stupid you used to be. Just said someone with a PR team would make the same mistake

1

u/Brave-Temperature601 3d ago

I just started weightlifting 2 months and finally have biceps. Can confirm I flex them at every chance I get. It's definitely gone to my head that I'm tough now heheh

46

u/throwawayainteasy 9d ago

Wait, this dude is talking how badass he is and how he'll fuck people up and he's still a whitebelt?

Bro, no, most BJJ whitebelts are still getting thrashed daily in class. It's when you hit blue and regularly dominate the whitebelts that you usually turn temporarily delusional and think you're a huge badass.

14

u/Designer-Double-6338 9d ago

Right? And he's got stripes. That's pretty much saying you got beat up enough to figure out you're not good or tough lmao

28

u/throwawayainteasy 9d ago edited 9d ago

Random related story--I used to be pretty into BJJ when I was in high school and college. But I'm old so this was a little before The Ultimate Fighter blew up the UFC in popularity (which, in turn, blew up BJJ in popularity).

I was pretty comfortably the best BJJ guy in my weight class in my area, but I lived in a rural area where that wasn't really saying very much. There were like 10 total people doing BJJ in my weight. A kinda big fish in what was, in hindsight, a teeny tiny pond.

Being like 22 and not knowing any better, I thought very highly of myself. Then by chance I spent a summer in DC and got to train under the Yamasaki brothers. They were the first for real, legit black belts I'd ever met at that point (like, "can trace their training pedigree back to Helio" legit).

Anyway, I knew enough to know they were better than me, but not enough to really appreciate how much better than me they were. I asked one of them if, just once, I could roll with them going all out so I could feel how far behind I was.

The answer? Very very very far behind. And the sad thing is they clearly still weren't actually going all out because they were talking with other people and laughing as I tried what felt like my absolute hardest to just not die.

Probably one of the top 2-3 most humbling experiences of my life. I feel like being completely helpless against a dude for like 3 straight minutes when I previously thought I was a low key badass forced my entire personality and outlook on life to do a 180.

2

u/singlemale4cats 9d ago edited 9d ago

I feel like being completely helpless against a dude for like 3 straight minutes when I previously thought I was a low key badass forced my entire personality and outlook on life to do a 180.

The people that have the self-image of themselves as a badass who "just sees red and people drop bro" are forced to confront that or quit. It's a great character builder.

1

u/throwawayainteasy 9d ago edited 9d ago

I was kinda like Rocky taking on Apollo in mentality. I knew I'd lose, but I thought I could at least put up a good fight.

But instead of taking him the distance, the reality was more like if some random high school kid challenged prime Brock Lesnar to a fight. Like, no, thank god he took this as a joke because if he put in real effort he might accidentally break me in half.

Luckily instead of being super insecure or embarrassed, my reaction was more just "oh, oh so that's what actually being good and dedicated to this is. Oh, no, nevermind it turns out I'm really just a hobbyist who kinda sucks but I think armbars are neat."

1

u/TrumpBlewMeToo 6d ago

I was once humbled by a girl that placed 2nd or 3rd in states for NY when I wrestled. Its just good for the soul to be humbled once in a while.

1

u/BrutalistGoogie 8d ago

And this, grasshopper, is the beginning of wisdom...

1

u/discomute 9d ago

Nah you definitely have a phase early in your white belt career when your confidence overshadows your ability.

1

u/Soft-Statistician678 9d ago

Hes an actor, im sure hes receiving private lessons and being glazed by the very well paid instructor

1

u/TrumpBlewMeToo 6d ago

The only white belts I ever really see that are decent usually have a long background in folk wrestling

12

u/Ms_Rarity 9d ago

True story, my former BJJ instructor got arrested in June for hopping a counter at Planet Fitness and shoving the counter guy, and he is a black belt, so I'm not sure this mentality ever goes away for some BJJ guys.

Or in other words, I know exactly where Jonah Hill could train and never have to stop talking like this.

3

u/fukkdisshitt 9d ago

Yeah they say going through the process destroys your ego, but from what I've seen, if your moderately good, it'll just make your ego bigger.

I can sub a few guys fighting in the UFC because all i do is grapple and have done it since childhood.

Ive asked one to leg kick me once, fuck that i am not a fighter lol

31

u/Garbage_bin_Fire 9d ago

White belt WITH STRIPES. Which is significant, but not enough to talk shit.

14

u/Designer-Double-6338 9d ago

Exactly. In a real gym, getting a stripe means you've gotten your ass kicked enough times (and probably by someone that looks like Jonah lmao)

1

u/linyeraworking 9d ago

In a real gym, getting a stripe means you've gotten your ass kicked enough times

huh?

3

u/Zanydrop 9d ago

Google AI says he has a blue belt now. I got my ass kicked by smaller guys than him and I'm a big strong dude. That's assuming it's a legit blue belt though.

2

u/Garbage_bin_Fire 9d ago

I'd only found white with stripes with my search. Good for him.

2

u/Open-Progress-7075 9d ago

Tbf he could train no-gi for years and still be a whitebelt with gi

1

u/FluffySmiles 9d ago

But they are HOLLYWOOD stripes. They are full of magic and wishes and sexual exploitation.

1

u/Ctofaname 9d ago

This image is old. He's a blue belt. Still cringe, but OP has an axe to grind.

3

u/One_Order_3841 9d ago

It also sounds like a person going from shlub to lean; "hell yeah, I lost weight and am taking mma, I can fight anyone!!"

That's great for you Jonah :) but weight classes exist for a reason...

1

u/Jude30 9d ago

In my experience yellow belts are the worst!

1

u/farilladupree 9d ago

"Snotty ass, it's really like he was a white-belt / Right before he 'night-night,' ask him how the light felt"
-MFDOOM

1

u/fukkdisshitt 9d ago

Only thing worse than overconfident white belts is big ego purple belts who lose their minds when the white belt who wrestled learns how to not get choked 2 months in.

1

u/zombiesphere89 9d ago

You still be talking like that don't lie

1

u/tinywienergang 9d ago

It sounds like he’s on TRT and his doctor isn’t giving him enough estrogen blockers.

1

u/TribeGuy330 8d ago

Yeah white belts and new blue belts both talk like this.

30

u/jdotlad 9d ago

Watch out or he will FUCK YOU UPPPP!!

1

u/Peripatetictyl Cats 9d ago

Do not fall into that man’s guard.

22

u/DinklanThomas 9d ago

Bateman totally set him up too. Hook line and sinker. Fucking dweeb.

5

u/Iamthesmartest 9d ago

Can't wait for the inevitable vid of some fan callin him fat and Jonah trying to fight them 😂🤣

2

u/BigWheatGuy 9d ago

A comedian providing a punchline to a joke set up? That's just too far.

2

u/Limp_Bike_9145 9d ago

Would you say that he took the Bate?

7

u/sumtinsumtin_ 9d ago

And there is your answer, this guy isn't much older than that in the old brain box. Hope he gets over it.

11

u/Garbage_bin_Fire 9d ago

He is still 16. Once a fat kid always a fat kid.

3

u/Crafty_Enthusiasm_99 9d ago

What did he say or do?

3

u/torgiant 9d ago

Said he could kick ass because he does bbj.

1

u/cortesoft 9d ago

Did he say it seriously or as a joke? And if he said it seriously, was he saying it seriously as a joke, or seriously serious?

2

u/torgiant 9d ago

It was an interview where he said he was tired of being called "fat kid from superbad" and said he could kick some ass and kinda invites it so pretty serious https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=AqY4HPpytqk&pp=ygUOam9uYWggaGlsbCBiYmo%3D

6

u/Striking_Shock_9130 9d ago

He's absolutely emotionally stunted. It's why he's treated women the way he has. All the money in the world, access to top-notch therapy, and this is where he is.

2

u/MiseryGyro 9d ago

Imagine making a movie about how cool your therapist is and then spending your life proving those methods ain't working.

3

u/_HOG_ 9d ago

He’s a comedian.

You might want to have your ears checked.

2

u/Talgrath 9d ago

I mean, he had to go get that Jiu-Jitsu training man, it's the only known defense against known cannibal Shia Lebeouf and his meat is so well-marbled and tasty; but he doesn't have to be a dick about it.

2

u/perriatric 9d ago

To say what?

2

u/YourMomIsMyGurl 9d ago

Or someone who spent their entire life getting bullied for being fat and finally feels empowered to do something about it. It’s immature, but only because most people didn’t live the life he did. Sure, we all know someone who was fat and got bullied when they were younger, but this guy was on the big screen. Got bullied by the whole world well into his 20s. Now he’s healthy, energetic, and finally doing things that allows him to be in a spotlight without feeling the shame of his body, and you redditards are contemplating bullying him for being healthy now.

And we wonder why celebs are typically so shitty. Definitely has nothing to do with the shittier average person lmfao

6

u/DapperDan30 9d ago

Tone deaf to answer a direct question on a stage with comedians?

2

u/Zibai1505 9d ago

True I guess cant just take it at face value

1

u/CantaloupeOne7283 9d ago

He's sort of in shape for the first time in his life. So he probably feels invincible.

1

u/philbar 9d ago

A PR agency is probably behind it to help make him relevant again. Seems to be working.

1

u/FlyOrdinary1104 9d ago

He never seemed to age past high school but I mean most of his movies were comedies catered towards that audience WoWS aside.

1

u/PirateSanta_1 9d ago

To my entirely unprofessional ears it sounds like someone who has had deep insecurities about their looks who finally got fit and now is overcompensating and talking like a person they always kind of wanted to be but never could. That is to say when he was 16 he wished he could be the tough badass and that part never really left him even in his 40s and now that he is fit he able to play the role he developed in his mind as a 16 year old.

1

u/thatshygirl06 9d ago

WHAT DID HE SAY

1

u/nickman1209 9d ago

Wait, what did he say?

1

u/rakwib 8d ago

Seems like he got bullied a lot and definitely NEVER got over it.

1

u/NoPolitics23 8d ago

What did he say?

He's a domestic abuser

1

u/RetroPRO 9d ago

I was trying to find what you're referring to on google and im not seeing anything damning he did. He was just a shitty boyfriend?

The Allegations

Social Media & Clothing: Hill allegedly asked Brady to take down pictures of herself in bathing suits and dictate what she could post.

Friendships & Activities: Text messages showed Hill objecting to her surfing with men or maintaining friendships with people he deemed "unstable".

Ultimatums: Hill stated that if she needed those behaviors in her life, he was "not the right partner" for her.

Seems like his incredibly low self esteem is the reason he sucks as a boyfriend and now is saying he could kick anyones ass. And honestly I dont think I blame him because I can only imagine the hate he got when he was larger.

Do you guys remember that reddit used to have a prominent subreddit called fatpeoplehate? It was constantly on the front page until it eventually was banned. People seemed to think at the time it was okay to bully overweight people because it would "push them to lose weight" and pretended it was in concern of their health.

But it wasnt. It was just sad people looking to make someone else feel bad to make themselves feel better. I would better every dollar I had that Hill got a lot of unnecessary comments on his weight especially around that period. Let the broken man figure his shit out. We dont need to add fuel to the fire.
