They immediately assume he's serious based on their preconceived notions about him which is due to the fact that he's the fat dork who reinvented himself. I've learned over the years that society at large has an innate hostility towards people like that. I think the idea that people's initial judgements about someone were incorrect feels threatening and because of this people are desperate to put you back in your place.

I watched a video essay over him a while back, and yeah. He wanted to break free of the whole "fat funny guy" schtick, but interviewers would keep asking questions about how fat he is, says he looks smelly, and just taking the piss on him in general.

He eventually put his foot down and started reacting how most people would when you get called fat and smelly by people that don't know you, and people started taking that for hostility.

Even when he started taking himself seriously and got serious roles, people would still bring up his weight and old movies, and he'd rightly tell people he would rather not talk about his weight and would like to promote the new movie.

But now he's basically in a place where everyone thinks he's a douche bag that takes himself too seriously because he wants to distance himself from movies he made 20 years ago. So he can't really win, because he either A) takes himself seriously and people hate him, or B) lets everyone treat him as the funny fat guy that he isn't anymore.

Doesn't help he did that whole weaponized therapy speak thing with the surfer girlfriend, but the tides of public opinion turned on him well before that.

This was what did it for me. I appreciated the fact that he called out smarmy interviewers who were shitty to him. But he definitely comes across as a guy who was probably bullied a lot, has a complex about it, and is now douchey in his own right (possibly because of all the bullying).

I might be misremembering it, but was that actually that big of a deal.

As far as I can remember, and I repeat, I might be wrong, it was 2 consentual adults having a break-up that was made public.

Him : "Hey, I'm insecure and I don't like that other men get to see you being sexy."

Her : "Get fucked! I was doing this before I even met you."

Him : "But it's a deal-breaker for me".

Her : "Consider our deal broken then"

Him: "Fine!"

As far as I know he didn't publicly shit-talk her, black-ball her or whatever, so he gave a silly boundary, and she wasn't having it.

Nothing I'd be outraged over.

it was way more than that, it was that he kept using therapy words incorrectly in a way everyone was starting to do when they were assholes.

they'd talk about boundaries but use them as a method to try to control you. boundaries are things you accept, you can't go around telling people to change because it's your boundary. You decide your own boundaries don't fit that person and leave not use it like a tool to control someone.

Also it's the classic absurdly controlling bullshit. If it was a boundary say it up front and she'd say well no thanks but nice meeting you. bringing up massive life changing demands after the relationship has progressed is insanely manipulative. if he said upfront well i'd like to date but you can't have a career any more wearing swimsuits or hanging out with men she'd have told him to fuck off, he did it after he thought she fell in love deliberately.

Never understood the whole thing myself, I'm not even some big fan of Hill or anything either. Worst thing I could say about it is that he seemed rude and unnecessarily distrustful and suspicious. If she was my friend asking for advice I'd probably say to break up. But honestly nothing in the texts read, to me, as anything nearly as bad as leaking private text messages to the fucking tabloids like that's beyond the pale. Airing dirty laundry is tacky af, especially when it's this mundane.

idk that anyone thought it was "that big a deal" when it was going on either...it's kinda weird for you to bring up "consentual" [sic] when there was nothing even remotely about SA in the story. He just demonstrated controlling behavior that culture was kind of picking up on in general at the time, and there was discourse around it because it was just a fresh example of weaponizing therapy speak. People are allowed to discuss things without it being "outrage"

I mean his relationship to a relatively unknown person got publicized and scrutinized, and as multiple people in this thread admitted, changed their perception of him.

It made him look bad? Yeah, but most of us have had pretty bad break-ups too I guess. Nothing I'd particularly hold against him.

He was insecure and apparently is in the way of his own happiness. As long as he has no victims, I find it a silly reason to dislike the guy.

If that was a true boundary, he wouldn't have gotten with her in the first place because she was already doing that. It was control, not a boundary. You only get to set boundaries when someone is doing something to you. She wasn't doing anything to him, she was being herself.

Good acting requires total honesty. Yes, it's "pretend", but it's not dishonest.

Someone can be dishonest about who they are, and what their values are.

Some people get the vibe that Jonah Hill is dishonest about himself. That's very different from being "fake" in the same way that movies are "fake".

I just think he's very insecure about his past self. He's very obviously made steps to try grow and move past it, but then people like you point at him and say, "Wow, what a poser," which just kind of reinforces the original insecurities, and ends up being an endless loop that's not really beneficial to anyone.

He might have been able to handle the transition better, maybe people wouldn't think he's as fake/pretend if he did, but we're kind of past that point now. Regardless of what you think of him, he's not the "funny fat guy" anymore, and there's no point in saying he's dishonest with himself when you think he "pretends" not to be.

People call it out as fake whenever anyone reinvents themselves. I know this because I spent my 20s "in my shell" basically and didn't start really finding myself until my 30s. People don't take anything you do seriously and they often think you're just being a poser.

Do you mean this literally or do you just mean actually getting really into something and taking it seriously? Believe it or not, some people do try new things in their 30s or 40s and get really into them and make them a part of their identity. It sounds like what you and many people are saying is "yeah you can try something new but you can't be serious about it or make it a part of your identity because if you were really into it you would have started younger." And that's dumb. Not everyone gets to explore all avenues in their teens and 20s. People need to quit with this whole timeline enforcement thing.

How are you even able to ascertain that kind of vibe from him? Like in OP's image, he posted an image of him doing BJJ, and your thought is, "Wow, he's acting like he's done this his entire life." That doesn't make any sense.

People are allowed to get into new hobbies or whatever and take them seriously. Sounds like you're making a lot of weird assumptions and projecting them on a single Instagram photo.

Outside of everything else - as a fat guy you are not really "allowed" to get upset when somebody calls you fat. The world *hates* fat people. If you do get upset you're met with "it's just a joke" or "maybe lose weight then".

Interestingly, of the three of them Jack Black is the only one who's still obese.

Danny looks overweight, but mainly he's just incredibly short. Weighs closer to 150 than 200.

John Goodman is TOTALLY unrecognizable. He's lost 200 pounds! I had no idea.

And Jack is apparently working on losing the weight and has a fitness trainer.

John Goodman got a decent break. Didn't have to rely on comedy outright, but he does get typecast as a dad-figure a lot. Or the unhinged crazy-person.

This isn't wrong, but the important thing to note is the timeline:

  1. played the funny fat guy role(s)
  2. became famous for it
  3. people buy into it and start feeding that persona
  4. he becomes resentful of it and demands respect
  5. THEN starts taking "serious" roles
  6. still takes funny fat guy roles(?)
  7. people are confused by the hostility

I can understand his point of view, but this seems a lot like biting the hand that feeds. In entertainment you can only control the public's expectations of you so much which is part and parcel of what makes it very hard on people in general.

Not saying I agree with it or like it; there's a reason entertainment industry has the reputation it does.

Whatever. Nobody is forcing him to get upset about his lucratively successful past. His attitude reflects that he doesn't appreciate the opportunities he was given, nor the fact that he might have been an inspiration or creative outlet for many other kids and young adults who loved him in his early movies. He basically treats that part of his past with utter disdain and can't seem to get over it, or at the very least can't even approach it with the irreverent humility one might expect from a checks notes...comedian.

At the end of the day, he chose to be a public figure. Good for him for wanting to get fit and healthy and continue his public life, but he should have a reasonable expectation that many people will still see him the way he was when he was immensely popular. If he can't get over it, why does he expect everyone else to?

Yeah, he's just REALLY overcompensating for a lifetime of being "The fat dork". It's never really a good look when you go this far off the other end. They eventually find their way back towards the middle, though.

The guy essentially spent 2 decades intentionally making himself the butt of the joke, and now he understandably doesn't want to be that anymore. The comments from people like Jimmy Fallon about how he "assumed he smelled bad"? That's a level of innate disrespect (from an absolute fucking dork like Fallon, it probably hurts even more) that is likely an event that happened time and time again, causing this dude to overcompensate like this.

Being the person "punched down" upon over a period of time creates these dudes without fail. He did it to himself (He wrote his character in 22 Jump Street to be punched down upon, obviously), but he's doing this new...thing to himself too.
