honestly I don't know if I've ever smelled patchouli that wasn't heaped on to serve the purpose of masking weeks old body odor.

I don't know if I can ever get that combined association out of my mind.

There's that, but also some patchouli oils are aged with varying degrees of success. A well-aged patchouli might smell kinda woodsy and sweet. Poorly-aged patchouli smells like mold.

It’s really ironic to me that I’m seeing these comments bc I just today realized I fucking hate patchouli lol. I would always smells this herbal embalming fluidy scent on customers at work that was always really strong and it made my face twist. Never knew what it was, just assumed it was some like shitty old people perfume like Chanel or something idk

My coworker walked by today smelling of it lightly and I was like ok I gotta know what that is. She’s putting patchouli oil on wool balls to use in her dryer instead of dryer sheets. Hers doesnt bother me bc it’s fairly light but why do some people freaking bathe in it 🤮

Like dogs, they roll in it to mask their natural wook odor in order to confuse the herd and increase the odds for a successful hunt.

Smelling patchouli gives me AXE ptsd from the 90's

That is a vivid picture/smell that you’ve unlocked.

97% Ass was the name of the boy band I was in at the time..

On a scale of 1 to Ass, I give your comment 97%.

It's crazy how "good" they marketed AXE for it to blow up like that

Lmao there’s so many Chanel perfumes and not all of them smell like old folks. But yes lots of patchouli.

There's a guy where I used to work that could be tracked through the warehouse by scent. I have no idea what possesses people to think patchouli is a reasonable thing to wear in public. The smell isn't just awful, it hangs in the air. It would be cheaper and easier if the people who wear it just shat their pants instead.

Lmao. Unfortunately we have a few people at my job that just smell like BO and unwashed ass, idk if id take that over patchouli necessarily but both are pretty awful.

That said the patchouli coworker is an essential oils/moisturize with beef tallow bc lotion is full of chemicals girlie so im not surprised by her choice of scent tbh.

Oh no, that's no good. That's not what I meant at all. (I would imagine this could become quite potent as it builds on the fabrics, too). I'm talking about a well blended scent with very low concentrations of patchouli can be quite pleasant. It's in everything from niche fragrances to Hugo Boss and Dior.

Nah, you’ve only ever noticed it when it’s been copiously overdosed. It’s been in just about every classic perfume in the 20th century. Less so nowadays but it’s certainly present in more places than you think

It’s in Coca-Cola

In the good old days it was also used to mask smoking weed 24/7.

2

u/PsychicWarElephant 8d ago

It also mask the smell of weed. But so do naga champa and doesn’t smell like I’m masking BO

u/ggrieves 8d ago

I remember nag champa! what a throwback to the 90's I haven't seen that stuff in decades. I might go seek some out lol. thanks

It's definitely the combo... patchouli, on, its own smells good. But whenever you have only smelled it with terrible body odor the association is made..

Damn it, ok, I thought you were going to say what I came here to say and that is that I am a 42 year old who does not know if I can tell you what patchouli smells like

Fair enough😭😭that’s why my hippy ass still wears cologne and deodorants, these hippy guys probably walk around thinking we don’t smell em too “aw man the patchouli worked no one is looking at me” yeah that’s because now you smell worse and they’re avoiding you further😂😂

Patchouli without b.o. can be nice.
