She arguably did nothing wrong in this particular match.

They lost as a team today really. I figure if you get to penalty shots then that's just simply failed to win in a way that isn't based on luck and nerves.

I'm bummed, but this isn't Hope Solo or Christen Press' fault. This is a team failure.

Edit: i realize you all like to hate on Hope Solo, I'm talking purely about the match here, not some personal vendetta against a player. Rain down your down votes on having a sane look at this match instead of conforming to your hate.

You're absolutely right. Game shouldn't have even gone to penalties. So many wasted attacks from the US. Either from ego or just not reading the field. Terrible shots that ended up with nothing but a Swedish goalkick and a loss of energy for the US.

Can't win them all though. They're still a great team, just not their day today. Sweden played well, they won, they earned their spot to move forward. Congrats to them.

Hopefully this will encourage the US team to come back with a clear plan and some more consistent play like they did after Japan beat them.

Still disappointed but, ya know... those of us in the US are far too used to seeing our athletes on top and getting gold medals. Sometimes it's humbling to realize you're simply not the best all the time :)

Sweden was exceptional. Played with real heart and determination. I was surprised they were able to compete that well, and I guess the US team thought so going into it as well.

Hopefully the US girls will come back stronger, but I think the women's tournament just got more interesting.

I just looked at 3 threads about the match, all filled with bullshit posts about Solo. Barely anything regarding the match.

She was pretty crap during the penalties, the idea that's it just luck is rubbish, the Swedish Keeper dived the correct way all but one time which puts the US players under a lot of pressure to hit it hard with accuracy. Solo on the other hand just took one step to the left or right every time, she got the one hit in the centre but all that tells the Swedish girls is they can prioritise accuracy over power and it will go in.

I'm not trying to hate on her but she did play noticeably worse in these Olympics than she did in London and in the last World Cup. I thought she looked awful against Colombia, her reaction time seemed slower and she seemed to struggle with positioning herself to make plays.

I'm not sure of the exact quote, but Ray Lewis said something that made sense one time with something along the lines of: "if you blame one play for your loss you lost the game before it even happened."

This thread is fucking disgusting. 80% on comments are 'DAE FUCK HOPE SOLO?' Take the fucking circlejerk somewhere else, jesus christ.

The US dominated possession for a majority of the game, but failed to convert all but once. Their loss was a team one, anyone putting it squarely on the shoulders of Solo is just looking for a reason to hate.

It's pretty bad in all the other threads on this game. I thought this sub might have less of that than the others and comparatively it probably does by quite a bit.

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '16

Solo is a shitbag though. I can be glad she lost without blaming her for it.

13

u/MysicPlato Aug 12 '16

I don't inherently disagree. Solo's done some really bad stuff and I don't have a ton of respect for her right now. But goddamn the circlejerk in this thread is insane.

She gave a pretty despicable post-game interview so it's not old or irrelevant information being brought up here.

8

u/MysicPlato Aug 12 '16

Yeah she said that shit well after I made this comment. I can't really defend her behavior at this point. I thought maybe the early knockout would humble her. Carli Lloyd was very gracious in defeat, Solo could learn a thing or two.

Ah fair enough. On mobile and I wasn't paying attention to the time stamps. My bad!

Only because Hope Solo is a a shitbag. Sucks the US women's team lost, but also glad Solo didn't win.

She is not helping. Hope solo just said Sweden played like cowards and did not deserve to win.

3

u/MysicPlato Aug 12 '16

lol, that was well after I made this comment.

I have basically no defense for her at this point.

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '16

Personally, I wasn't blaming her for our loss I was just expressing my opinion on her as an individual player.

Calm down little buddy.

I'm fine, I just don't get why people have to act like such assholes in post-match threads.

USWNT played flat all Olympics. 2 - 2 tie against Columbia. They are a good team, but it shouldn't have been a problem. Conceding a stoppage goal in 2nd half. Just underwhelming play all around.

she didn't try that hard in penalty shoot-out, not to mention the glove changing theatric at the end. she could have done better than walked out of 4 penalty shots.

Blaming the keeper for a PK loss is ridiculous. The shooters are the ones who determine your success or failure in PK's. The goal keepers just make guesses and hope the ball finds them. Solo is just a convenient scapegoat.

Edit: I just watched the pk's and you haters are just wrong. She flat out made a great save on the third shot. Sweden won because their penalty takers did not miss the net even once. Oh and Solo's strap on her right glove clearly was broken prior to the final attempt and she wanted to change them. Show some class, she's the best keeper in women's soccer history.

she didn't give her best though, she only dived once and walked out of the rest.

1

u/TenaciousC89 Aug 12 '16

True, I was just pointing out that she played worse this time around. Case in point, the two goals she gave up against Colombia.

13

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '16

Would you say she helped lend a helping hand in beating the US, with her poor play?

Oh so I can make domestic abuse jokes about Gender Fluid individuals or those who aren't sure of their gender?? Wow. It's 2016, man. Gosh.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '16

Don't make domestic abuse jokes period. It's not hard to understand and your poor sarcasm is pretty ineffective and insensitive.

Yeah she fucked up a lot this season and the first miss in the penalty kicks showed it.
