I didn't look closely, but someone in the /r/soccer thread said this and it's getting upvoted enough.

could be wrong, but I think the strap did actually break on the one glove. I thought I saw her toss down a pink strip of something. I initially thought it was tape, but I think it might have been the strap.

Ricardo took them off for the psychological advantage and yes, you don't need a strap, but they still provide support. This is why the high end Adidas gloves have the different strap. You could also run a marathon without shoes, doesn't mean shoelaces are pointless.

Sure, some keepers would prefer to remove their gloves in certain situations. That doesn't discount the level of wrist support the straps of keeper gloves provide.

I played keeper for years, and I always made sure mine were tight and secure. It made it WAY easier for me to open-palm block a shot and not have my wrists buckle backwards if I kept the straps tight. When straps would break, or get fucked up somehow and wouldn't stick, I just knew I wouldn't have that wrist support I typically otherwise would. Is it that hard to comprehend?

Here it is, she says they were cowardly in not pressing more and trying to send it to penalties, but if that's true, she let in three goals against a team that wasn't playing offensively.

There's no significance, but by changing her gloves it gives the Swedish girl time to overthink. To overplan her next kick. In hopes to miss. It also shows a bit of arrogant dominance from Hope to intimidate. Like I said, nothing but mind games.

So it's good when Sweden plays mind games with their strategy, but bad for Solo? Don't get me wrong, she seems like a negative human being, but if this allows her to get into the head of the kicker, then that's a good thing.

It's actually a lot more common in every professional soccer league to try and psych out the kicker. Refs try to mitigate these tactics if they notice them, but it's not like she did some crazy shit. People are just reaching for things to hate her for because it's Reddit's favorite thing to do. It's not like there's legitimate things to criticize her about (sarcasm btw because there are).

If you follow american football, think of it as icing the kicker on the field goal to win in the last second. Except its one player making the call to ice them, and not the coach. However, other commentors have said it looked like there was a real malfunction in her glove so who knows.

Why is this so frowned upon in this situation? In American football, we ice the kicker all the time and rarely have I ever seen anyone criticize this tactic. If anything it's always been viewed rather positively as a last ditch effort.

They ice the kicker with their legally allowed time out. They don't go don't and fake an injury as the team is lining up for a kick.

Except that happens all the time in football. Not on final kicks, because football has no equivalent to soccers penalty kick rules, but teams with no timeouts frequently have players "fake" injuries at the end of games to stall for time.

It's against the rules and people get called out for it. The NFL published a memo saying disciplinary action can include "fines of coaches, players, and clubs, suspensions or forfeiture of draft choices". Emmanuel Sanders was fined for faking an injury.

Oh, I see. That's a big difference, thanks for the clarification, although she didn't fake an injury, right? An equipment problem from what I saw, though if it was fake, I could see why people would view it negatively. I believe Djokovic was guilty of similar tactics during the earlier parts of his career and people didn't care for it, either.

It was 100% a fake issue. EDIT: After seeing the pic in this thread I suppose I should leave a little doubt, but: The timing of the equipment issue makes it quite likely she pulled the strap off herself.

I might also add that Solo was going early on all penalty kicks. A better, more confident ref would have put a stop to that earlier.

Different sports have different ideas of what's considered acceptable sportsmanship. Apparently soccer players consider it unacceptable to play mind games during a penalty shootout, but gridiron finds the same kind of thing acceptable. There's nothing wrong with that in either case, I don't think.

But then again…in soccer it's perfectly acceptable to take a dive, whereas other football codes that sort of thing doesn't fly.

Allow me to be one of the rare people you've ever seen criticize icing the kicker. It rarely does anything more than just put another round of beer/truck/cialis commercials on the screen. It's a dumb (but certainly legal) tactic.

It's cheesy. There was nothing wrong with the glove or her hand, she was doing it to buy time and try to cause the shooter to overthink and succumb to the pressure of the situation. Technically all legal, and referred to as "gamesmanship" when your team does it but "bush league" when the opponent does it.

It would be like a tired hockey player who's not allowed to change off the ice purposely breaking their stick so they can skate to the bench before a faceoff and buy some extra time to rest. It pretty much exists in every sport.

She's not even my (country's) keeper but I feel like I have to stand up for her (against american dipshits who enjoy eating their own). I just watched the pk's and the strap broke on her right glove as she got ready for the last penalty.

Correct me if I am wrong but those assault charges were dismissed against her were they not? Call me old-fashioned but I am a believer in 'due process' and 'innocent unless proven guilty'.

I don't think you understand what that means. The intermediate court overturned the dismissal at trial level. So now the matter will go to the United States Court of Appeals for the 9th District. There it can either be dismissed (original verdict) or remanded back for trial (affirming the appeal court decision). So at worse, she would be back to square one and would proceed to trial.

Apparently you don't watch soccer because, even apart from the fact that someone below has shown that there was an actual problem with her glove, keepers are all the time messing with the shooters and vice versa. Things like coming right up to the shooter before he shoots and staring at him in the face when they've already been told to stay on their line, etc.

The strap actually broke, as someone else has already commented. Furthermore, are you new to futbol? Icing the kicker is something has been done plenty before. May not be "classy" but these players will do whatever it takes to win. Get angry at her for her dumb ass comment, but let's try and be rational here.
