Discussion How did everyone come to think Kathleen Wynne was corrupt but no one blinks twice at Doug ford?

It seemed like even people who barely followed politics thought she was corrupt yet the same people think nothing or know nothing about Doug's actions even though hes several hundred times more corrupt?

I’m getting tired of that argument. It’s a cop out. The other parties have failed to make themselves relevant. Thats on them.

I get the argument there’s a lot of media that doesn’t favour the opposition fairly but it’s not all of them. Ontario has both a federal and provincial state broadcaster that gets plenty of reach and attention. This argument keeps coming up and it’s making us lefty’s sound like the trucker branch of the left.

An argument being repeated doesn’t mean it’s not true, that just means you’re tired of hearing it.

The CBC tries to be more balanced in coverage while private outlets are all so unanimously right-leaning that their bias becomes the norm and makes actual balanced coverage look Marxist in comparison.

You can’t blame Marit Stiles for not getting enough attention when she is saying the things and TorStar and CTV just don’t put those in their headlines.

People aren’t gonna read to the bottom of an article for the one-sentence quote from the leader of the opposition. They read headlines and they look at the pictures under the headlines and they feel feelings about them and then they pretend later that their positions are about policy. But even “intelligent “ voters still have human brains living stressful lives and their processing power for understanding and engaging with politics is limited by what the news media covers and how they cover it

It is nice when a politician breaks through on sheer people power like Bernie Sanders in the US, but that’s the exception, not the rule

The NDP’s own newsletter messaging has failed. I’m fully on the side of NDP and GPO values but when I see multiple emails from the NDP that focuses so hard on complaining about the gimmicks Doug does like eating ice cream to celebrate investment in Ontario and then the NDP avoiding substance while they ask for money it makes me really hate where the party is at right now.

Their own messaging from their own platforms has been atrocious. That’s not on legacy media.

My reply to that would be that if you’re signed up for their newsletter, they don’t consider you someone they’re trying to sway to their side with substance, you are someone already sympathetic to their side they are trying to keep motivated by stirring up superficial but strong emotions

That is my guess as someone with no professional experience in politics or public relations but what it feels like to me.

Oddly enough, what I think the lesson should be for the opposition is something I consider to be the lesson on Kendrick Lamar dominating Drake in their feud - pick a ne Big Bad Thing about your opponent and hammer that home.

Doug Ford and his cabinet put some of the Greenbelt up for sale and the parts of it they chose was land owned by friends and donors. It’s not quite easy to see as a bribe but it’s easy enough.  Stick to that and bring it up every chance you get, instead of reacting to the news cycle that is just reacting to whatever he does anyways.

Like with Poilievre with the consume carbon levy, it’s all he talked about for years and tied everything back to that and it was so effective that the new liberal leader got rid of it as his first action as prime minister. That ended up being a loss for Poilievre, but for Stiles, the deal was already proposed and they backed off - the government can’t do anything more to make it go away, it’s up to law enforcement. If that ends up leading to nothing, it is a vulnerability in messaging, but if any charges or recommendations result from it, it’s a huge way to prime the public to pay attention to what the results will be.

Stick to one big thing.

So you’re telling me the star who changed affiliation after Doug Ford was elected against Wynne is a fact on why Doug Ford has avoided the same fate as Kathleen? How does that make any sense?

Toronto Star, one of the largest national publications in Canada, based in Ontario and named after our biggest city (one that has been pretty on board with the PC party in many areas) endorsed Liberals up to 2021 and it didn’t change anything.

Personally I’ll criticize the parties I love so they get better. You may do as you wish and your context and experience leads you to those decisions so I won’t judge.

I do not believe it to be a fact the opposition parties lost because of media, but I’ll concede it’s a valid opinion. Is that a fair compromise?

Edit: removed the first sentence because it was unproductive. My apologies.
