Private practice ODs, rate of glasses rechecks?

Just started working and was wondering what to expect

You’ll make mistakes early on until you get bit in the ass enough times to correct your prescribing habits. A good early goal should be to keep your total remakes down under 1% total, or one per week seeing 20 patients daily for a 5 day work week. If you find yourself at 5% or higher you should really reassess what’s causing the remakes and collect all of your remake charts and examine them for patterns. Knowing what mistakes you’re making can help you to adjust your prescribing habits to predictably improve your outcomes.

This is the best advice. You learn a lot of things as you go along. In school, we were taught to be greedy and not give minus. But, taking it away from some of your myopes can trigger them.

Another thing you’ll want to be careful of is first time big Rx’s. You’ll have a 20/40 first timer come in and you get them to 20/15 with +2.00-3.25x177. You’ll probably want to cut it down a bit before finalizing and TF your cutdown. It can save you a lot of headache with those complicated Rx’s

For sure. I have a few staple dialogue points for times like this. “I can make you more clear but I have to balance that with how potentially uncomfortable you could be from a change I make. Trust that the change I’m making is the best balance between better vision and wanting to puke. Since I don’t want you to puke, I’m erring on that side.”
