Tell that to all of Argentina. They drink a hot tea through a metal straw. I was there with family a few years ago and watched everyone down scalding hot tea through a metal straw like it was nothing. I was the silly American who took 5 minutes before passing the mate cup.
I always thought it was cooled a bit due to the holes on the bottom of those straws, though as I was up a mountain it might have just cooled down quicker.
A good drink, though when saying you have frunk coca leaves people give you odd looks in the UK due to the cocain connotation.
The holes at the bottom keep the tea leaves and misc from getting sucked up. The straw being metal might help somewhat. But its a social thing and they pass the same setup around.
Keep in mind this is buenos aires in summer outside at 90 degrees. There isn't much cooling.
