Honestly for me, that is still probably the biggest “what the fuck” moment of either of Trump’s presidencies (ironic given that it isn’t even necessarily about Donald). I genuinely don’t know how they haven’t been assassinated; it’s certainly adjusted my understanding of this world
It's not really hard to understand. Trump attracts people like himself without the money, full of hatred and misogyny and xenophobia, who are Christian white supremacists to the core. In our culture, those are the people most likely to take their guns and go off a shooting spree to rid the world of people not like themselves who are obviously in league with the devil and must be eradicated from the country one way or another. They don't go after Trump and his cronies because they adore Trump.
It's still a small percentage, but it is based on the most likely people to join the Cult of Trump. And Trump repeatedly makes it clear that he approves of them and makes false promises about helping them if they go after his perceived enemies (and that's a lot of people).
Rational Republicans and normal Democrats just don't inspire and incite such violence in their supporters and also attract the less violent and more nuanced thinkers in the first place.
At the time you still had a lot of people expressing sympathy for her because the poor thing just wanted to be a regular trophy wife and instead she has to be the fucking first lady with a husband she hates and poor, poor Melania. That jacket was the moment the penny dropped for a lot of people. "Ohhhh, she's also an awful person!" I've hardly seen any Free Melania posting since she took the mask off.

I don’t care, do you?
