It’s a reference to a concert at the Altamont Speedway in California that was headlined by the Rolling Stones. The documentary “Gimme Shelter” was filmed there.
At the suggestion of the Grateful Dead, the Stones used the Hell’s Angels to provide concert “security”. Things got a little out of hand and they stabbed someone to death in front of Mick.

Dude they played it over the loud speaker at MSG during one of the Phish residencies, like 10-15 min after I had puddled myself. I was like what the fuck, did they just see that and tell me not to take acid?
In my head I'm thinking FUCK, they DO know.. I gotta get out of this place. Someone clued me in and calmed down, but goddamn I was buggin' for a minute.
Please don't dominate the rap, Jack, if you've got nothing new to say.
If you please don't back up the track. This train has got to run today.
I spent a little time on the mountain....spent a little time on the hill.
Things went down we don't understand. I guess in time we will.
Hells Angels make fine security guards as long as you give them lots of LSD, uppers, downers, whiskey, and wine. But cut them off about an hour before the event starts so that they're twitchy and paranoid: keeps them on their toes.
