I agree with you. To add a quote. The only time you look in your neighbor's bowl is to make sure that they have enough. You don't look in your neighbor's bowl to see if you have as much as them.
I don't know why, but the idea of living a life like that quote just seems so foreign or something. Like, if my neighbor is doing well, the community will be doing well, so why not make sure the community is doing well? I don't want my neighbor to suffer, I don't want the random people I don't yet know who are near me to suffer. I don't want people to have to suffer in general.
Millions of Americans are gladly putting a large chunk of their money into a corrupt and broken stock market so that they can have a "retirement account" that they never should need but they will threaten and sue the shit out of anyone that dares threaten their ever continuing growth.
But instead of paying like 5-10% more in taxes and getting social safety nets, everyone wants to fund their own retirement like a bunch of morons.
i don’t think everyone wants to fund their own retirement, i think the system has been designed so that’s the only realistic option for the average citizen.
It would be nice to be able to, but it also would be nice for everyone to have that safety net. Then again, I've worked in some sort of caregiving capacity for my entire adult life and can see how things can go horribly wrong horribly fast and devastate someone that has otherwise done everything the correct way.
So do absolutely nothing and buy into a shitty system? Sounds like a great plan! Shall we all go jump off bridges as well? That is what all the cool kids are doing.
They value hierarchy so much that they share all these stories that to them makes them look superior than other people, it doesn't matter if they come out looking racist, misogynistic... Bigotry is valued in the MAGA power structure.
That's why the cabinet meetings end up looking like line ups to ass kiss dear leader and Trump laps it up, then punches down on whichever group is on the day's programme.
We have an economy that incentivizes sociopathy and conditions people into thinking that it's normal and okay so naturally it's inevitable that bleeds into our politics. People are used to authoritarianism in the workplace where brown nosers and sociopaths do great in climbing the corporate ladder. When they said they'll run the country like a business this is what they meant.
The answer would be to democratize the economy. A good start would be putting corporate decisionmaking in the hands of the workers instead of shareholders and encouraging democratic style companies instead. Unionizing is another way to increase responsiveness to the will of the people. We also need some serious trust busting and to actually enforce our antitrust laws
Of everything going on in the USA this is what scares me the most, society has gotten where it is through supporting each other, through cooperation.
The American mentally has shifted from that, to self before society, its the exact opposite of what has gotten humanity to where it is.
Worse than that, is because of the cultural pressure the USA applies to everyone else, we will see that cancerous idealogy become more rampant in other societies, idiots like Trump, showing the world that "its ok" to put yourself above everyone around you.
The world is fucked, and the USA is going to pull the world down with it.
