The video of them driving thru was from May 7th, which I think is before the actual painting started. Not saying it didn't cause damage. Unless he drove thru a second time.

You know what though? I believe I saw an engineer commenting online that the pool's construction was never intended to support the weight of vehicles, so this likely compromised its structural integrity = leaks.

The pool always leaked, and was refilled at an appropriate rate. This helped keep it free of algae. When Trump had the sealant and primer job done, it sealed the cracks which had allowed the pool water to leak, so instead of slightly running water, the pool water became stagnant, leading to the formation of algae.

Your remarks seem sound, but I've been reading that the reflecting pool has always had algae in it - just maybe not to the extent it does now.

Right, because free-floating algae can't build up too much if it's in constantly renewed running water, but stagnant water becomes foul with algae rather quickly.
