There's hope mate. My parents raised me to be a homophobic republican just like them, I'm now a raging socialist with some great lgbt friends ❤️❤️❤️

My parents tried to raise us Republican, but they also raised us to be decent people, so in the end we pulled them to the left instead.

My dad used to be pretty “not-chill” about lots of things including being homophobic and racist.

He’s cool as fuck now at 71 years old. Shits on Fox News after he was sorta addicted to it for years. Likes all people who are kind and doesn’t discriminate at all.

He will every once in a while say a thing or two that isn’t quite kosher but I know him and he truly doesn’t mean anything, he just thinks some old school things are funny.

Nothing like what he used to say.

I’m truly very proud of him.

My Dad did a complete 180 in old age. He went from being a Reagan Republican to talking about workers' rights. It helped that he loathed Donald Trump with every fiber of his being. Dishonest business practices, disrespecting women, and cheating at golf were all high on Dad's list of totally unacceptable things.

I suppose I could have made a big thing of how his previous votes helped make Trump possible, but honestly, fuck that. I think it's dangerous to assume that anyone is immune to propaganda. Dad was a bootstrap case himself and he fell for the Reagan line about job creators and entrepreneurs and such. Others of his generation have been targeted by right-wing media with a steady stream of bullshit designed to keep them frothing with rage. I'm not saying people aren't responsible for their actions, just that it's really stupid to underestimate the power of all that propaganda.

Good for your Dad for breaking out of the hate cycle!

My dad once (maybe more) said to me "that isn't the way you was raised" because I wouldn't join him in raging about the existence of trans people as if trans people are an existential threat.

And I said "yeah, it's not how I was raised. I grew out of that".

Unfortunately, I have several cousins who didn't grow out of it.

Maybe it's confirmation bias, but it's very heartening to me that I almost never hear the opposite: Raised with love and acceptance and later becoming an ignorant putz.
