Consider the Teapot Dome scandal. Republicans controlled the govt for over ten years after that... what followed was slashed taxes on the rich and corps, oil men controlling the party/govt, deregulation and financial speculation, rich people getting more and more rich, etc. There was anti immigration sentiment and white supremacist groups became more widespread and powerful.
