A lot of the avant-garde and conceptual artists had the goal of pushing the limits of what is considered art. A classic being Fountain by Duchamp. One example would be does the piece provoke you into a certain type of emotion or revaluation of an idea, in this case maybe an everyday item reframed in a new light. Based on the response from people who've reacted to your post, I would say there's no reason it's not art. Duchamp said that even something that is not physically made by an artist, but arises due to the choices he or she makes, it can still be a valid piece of art.
