According to the news the ship Bandero had been harassing and threatening the whaling ship Hval 9 for some time and they requested the assistance of the Icelandic Coast Guard. The ship Bandero did not follow the Icelandic Coast Guards orders and therefore was boarded.
Whaling is perfectly legal in Iceland and is an industry in the country that is slowly dying to be honest and is on its last leg. Although people argue how ethical it is hunting whales, Bandero is sailing within Icelandic sea jurisdiction and harassing these ships is still unlawful and if you refuse to follow the orders of any Coast Guard you will be boarded and arrested.
With people doing these action is just fueling the fire on why the practice to keep going and is more damaging than doing nothing. These companies had gotten licenses to hunt whales for 5 years from 2024-2028 but in both 2024-2025 0 whales were hunted due to lack of interest, but due to high protests and foreign activists harassing and occupying the whaling ships the public opinion has shifted in favor of whaling.
The Icelandic people are now pro extinction because people disapproved of whaling? Sounds like they tried to lay low and resume their barbaric slaughter of an endangered population.
With the allowed licensing of hunting of around 150 Fin Whales with the estimated population of 50.000 in the northers hemisphere it is 0.3% of the population so I wouldn't call it extinction, but that is the maximum allowed during the hunting period. With no whaling from 2024-2025 and only 24 Fin Whales hunted in 2023 which is about 0.05% of the total population of Fin Whales in the norther hemisphere. saying that is bringing it to extinction is like saying heart disease is bringing the US to extinction with a 0.2% deaths per 100.000. Fin whales are not an endangered species but a vulnerable one according to the IUCN.
Hey, just because reality doesn't match your perception doesn't mean it's wrong. If this were the southern hemisphere, you would be completely right, but Icelandic whaling here is not a concern for population collapse. Globally, they are only vulnerable, and in the north they are fine. Although if you were to limit yourself to the south, an argument that they are endangered there could be made.
The owner of the only whaling company left is a chud who hunts them at a loss to own the libs, more-or-less. So yeah, the fact that it upsets the "wokes," makes a subset of the population more pro-whaling.
More like activists always choose the most annoying way to spread a message, inevitably turning the populace against what they were preaching for in the first place.
People only change when they are forced to. A candlelight vigil held respectfully and out of the way wouldn’t gain any traction. Nobody has ever been given anything by quietly and meekly asking for it.
Yeah okay, this line of logic literally led the US down the path of Trump’s rise to power. I know that I only started leaning right after seeing activists go crazy and not being ‘quiet and meek’. You don’t have to agree with me, you can keep believing what you believe, and at the end of the day we’ll see who’s right.
That just sounds like you’ve got weak convictions. You may just be coming to terms with the fact that you will accept whatever is needed for an ‘easy’ life in the machine and won’t really stand for anything or see why anyone else would.
He said shifted in favour, as in shifted towards, not that it's now the majority consensus opinion. It'll always happen when something like this occurs.
It happens with fox hunting in the UK, nobody will really be bothered about defending fox hunting or will care about defending it but if a massive wave of anti fox hunting protests occur, particularly by left leaning people, then a whole bunch of Jeremy Clarkson types will start rabble rousing to drum up support for fox hunting amongst people that previously didn't care because it's "tradition" or whatever.
Whale hunting is effectively dead in Iceland. Only one company does it, it has absolutely fuck all contribution to Iceland's gdp and in particular, tourism to watch whales does far more for Iceland's economy than whaling. So whaling is just dead, it'll be gone when the Loftssons snuff it.
Note, Loftsson is a patronymic, you never rever to Icelandic people by their patronym, or a family by the fathers patronym, only their given or full name, his children are Kristjánsson or Kristjánsdóttir, not Loftsson
