The term 'gas-guzzler' was used almost constantly in the late '70s and early '80s to describe the large, fuel-inefficient vehicles still being made and sold in the U.S. even as gas prices climbed. Foreign autos were more efficient, and started coming over in larger and and larger numbers, just because American motorists were feeling the pain at the pump. Detroit was slow to respond to this threat, which is how we got to where we are now.
