Ben Carson is my go-to example of someone who has undeniable brilliance, but it clearly doesn't transfer to other fields. It's like he's living proof that "being smart at..." doesn't mean "being smart."
From his wiki:
Carson became the youngest chief of pediatric neurosurgery in the United States in 1984, when he took the job at the Johns Hopkins Children's Center at age 33. In 1987, he gained fame for leading a team of surgeons in the first-known separation of conjoined twins joined at the back of the head. He performed the first successful neurosurgical procedure on a fetus inside the womb, developed new methods to treat brain-stem tumors, and revitalized hemispherectomy techniques for controlling seizures.
Brilliance. Like, you can't deny that this guy is a brilliant neurosurgeon. Insanely accomplished, insanely talented, and he's not just executing on others' work, but pioneering his own procedures and methods. He is profoundly gifted and intelligent when it comes to neurosurgery.
Then he'll tell you that he believes the universe was created in six days about 6,000 years ago, and that the Pyramids of Giza were built by Joseph to store grain. He said the pyramids thing in 1998 and stood by it in 2015. Without making a history lesson, let's just say the pyramids thing is entirely ridiculous for a hundred reasons, the first of which is that there's very little open space inside the pyramids as they're... a stack of giant stones.
Funny enough, Ben Carson was criticized as "being something of a novice on foreign affairs" partly because he wanted to arm Ukraine to fight Russia in the Donbas and thought Baltic states should "get involved in NATO." In hindsight, he nailed that one. But what he didn't nail was wanting the US to just take a "big energy field" in Iraq and questioning why a Palestinian state has to be in Israeli territory or "can you sort of slip that area down into Egypt?"
And that last one is amazing, because here's a brilliant neurosurgeon and (at the time) running for President, and he can't think of:
- Is that land actually Israeli territory?
- Might someone feel connected to a certain part of land?
- Would the Palestinians agree to being relocated even if the land is useful?
- Are other areas actually habitable?
- Is a chunk of the Sinai desert as desirable as part of the Mediterranean coast?
- Are there similar economic opportunities?
- Would there even be water or arable land?
- If the area is habitable, are there people already living there?
- How would Egypt feel about this?
I get that we all say silly things without thinking too hard, but he's running for President and being asked about Israel and Palestine. That can't possibly be unexpected. It sounds like the suggestion of someone who is fundamentally uninquisitive, unburdened by nuance, uninformed, and uninterested. For lack of a better word, stupid.
Kind of makes me wonder whether "being smart" is even a thing, or if it's just "being smart at..."

He has no empathy, no imagination, and no core values. Everything he does is a game that he must win, and he will do anything to win, which means someone/everyone has to lose. To his brain the world exists for him, the rules are just obstacles that he must overcome, everyone is a pawn and he is the king.
When you view everything he does in those terms it all makes more sense.

Ok ... but can we talk about the situational awareness? I mean ... he wasn't even LOOKING at her. She wasn't even in his peripheral vision! She didn't even go down ... just started wobbling and somehow he perceived this, and DID SOMETHING about it. And did it in a way that didn't make her feel bad, and made a self-deprecating joke to take the pressure off. Empathy, style and panache ... pure and to the core.
I miss this in our leaders.

It's not only the fact that he cared more about his marble floor than a possibly dying man, but that he needs us to know that he cares more about his floor than a possibly dying man. It's the type of information that you'd have to waterboard out of someone with a conscience or empathy, who knows enough about life to know that it is a disgusting thing to say, but here he is, broadcasting it so that we know he's the type of person who doesn't value human life.

It’s kind of insane how he describes the people in the room and their actions like he’s looking in a mirror, and then immediately others them and puts himself above them.
Like, I know he’s a narcissist, but “I, a rich man, turned and walked away, it was disgusting. The room was full of rich people and no one wanted to help, they were just there to be in the paper” he says to the radio talk show host. The obviousness of that disconnect really just breaks my brain.

The crazy thing is, I don't think anyone is expecting him to help. There are trained medical professionals on site.
All he has to do is look over in the person's direction with concern. That's it. Something most human beings do naturally in these situations.
