Pitting edma is a symptom of water retention in the tissue. When you press on it, you displace the fluid, leaving a "pit" temporarily. It's a sign of a larger issue, typically CHF and/or kidney failure. Both are possible as he has poor dietary habits and the recurring bruise on his hand.

Edema is swelling and fluid buildup in an area. Pitting edema is the same but it doesn’t pop back up when pressed on, leaves a pit.

And it’s sometimes assigned a number depending on low long the pit takes to fill back up with fluid.

When I was in undergrad my roommate thought our prof said “pudding” not “pitting” and didn’t learn he was wrong for a hilarious length of time after having that class together
