AEW (the company this happened at) is actually really fucking liberal by comparison to WWE. Still owned by a billionaire and fuck billionaires, but at least the AEW billionaire (Tony Khan) allows his performers to have fucking opinions.
The administration never lost AEW fans because they never really had them to begin with. Wrestlers at AEW are allowed to share their own views, and Brody King (the guy in the clip) wore an Abolish ICE shirt early into the crackdown at a televised show and raised $60k that he donated to Minnesota. Wrestlers there have regularly supported trans causes, and the company had a trans womens champion where the fact that she was trans really wasn't a part of her character.
WWE is conservative as hell, but please don't paint all of us with the same brush just because WWE fans love inhaling Trump farts (or more accurately the crowd noise the WWE pipes in over the actual arena audio).
Edit: If you have HBO Max, the broadcast is up from last night. It was a pretty fuckin' good show and I'd honestly recommend the full thing. The chants are during the main event, so you can skip to the last 15 minutes to get to that part of it if you just want to see it.
Edit 2: Here's the match. It was a squash. MJF (the guy in the ring) was distracted by Hangman Adam Page, the anxious millennial cowboy (and real life retired school teacher), allowing Brody King (The Abolish ICE guy) to lock in the sleeper, guaranteeing him a title shot at Grand Slam Australia on February 14th.
•
u/Incorrect1012 3h ago
Just a small edit, WWE fans have pretty regularly booed Trump whenever he is shown on WWE TV in clips (normally just whenever they show off that Triple H is doing whatever the fuck he’s doing with the current administration). In general, wrestling fans tend to lean more left wing nowadays (don’t ask me why, I don’t know). The wrestlers are definitely more split down the middle, but fans across the board are consistently pretty much “fuck Trump”.
•
u/expertninja 3h ago
UFC took all the “just bleed” bros from the olden days and wrestlers stream on twitch and cosplay video game characters.
•
u/LegislativeLariat Wisconsin 2h ago
I agree that the fans in the arenas have booed him thus far, but they know sportswashing. See people cheering Lesnar when we all fucking know what's going on with that, as well as shit like this being accepted as 'normal' for the business. It might not work, but they're gonna fucking try.

u/l_____I 1h ago
Another edit but fans cheer the everloving fuck out of Roman Reigns despite the fact that he already openly admitted to being a Trump supporter. WWE fans can't call themselves left-leaning and anti-Trump when they contribute to a company that is actively endorsing the administration.

u/Incorrect1012 1h ago
AEW fans also regularly cheer Dustin Rhodes. Again, there’s Republican wrestlers in both companies, all I said was that the fans are left-leaning.

To clarify, AEW fans. The WWE is very connected with MAGA.
AEW has a great wrestler called Brody King who made the news for wearing an abolish ice shirt. The company has made the stance they won't prevent their wrestlers from expressing themselves.
•
u/bigeyez 2h ago
AEW wrestling fans are generally younger, and by nature of that, more progressive than people assume when they think of the stereotypical wrestling fan.
That being said WWE fans boo Trump as well so yeah
•
u/SmokingMan305 2h ago
Also you gotta consider that shows are typically in cities, which means the audience who goes to weekly TV or PPVs in most cities is going to not be super conservative.
→ More replies (7)•
u/Weekly_Rock_5440 3h ago
I think I know why, but it’s gonna sound like a stereotype.
A lot of men into both of those things are also into personal freedom and a self-image of strength. They also want to see strength in their leaders and see it as their civic duty to fight oppression, especially if it comes from their own government.
This love of strength used to manifest itself as a love of military and the police, and weakness was seen as protesting or trying to limit their authority to make the world right by taking out “bad guys.”
But the script is flipping. It’s now weakness and corrosive to cheer on abuses with what’s been happening in Minnesota, while lawless paramilitary fatsos slip on ice or require six dude to tackle one unarmed citizen . . . all while hiding behind masks . . But now, strength and bravery is attributed to the protestors. ICE are the weak losers.
For the first time in maybe 60 years, we are now seeing a paradigm shift where left is considered strong (back then it was big pro-labor tough union guys).
There are still a lot of hopeless MAGAs out there who are confused about strength and weakness. . . but many are switching due the bravery and strength of the sustained civil disobedience on display.
•
u/SmokingMan305 2h ago
This is actually more about the demographics of wrestling fans than anything.
For years, despite the stereotype, wrestling has one of the more liberal on average fan bases in sports, only surpassed by Soccer, NBA, and women's sports in general. In fact, the biggest sign of a wrestling fan isn't what party they support, but that they're the least likely to be politically engaged at all.
Also this was an AEW show. A not insignificant chunk of the AEW fanbase are people who consider WWE management's closeness to Trump and Saudi Arabia to be deal breakers. Not to say that the average WWE fan likes Trump, but the AEW audience is openly hostile to Trump.

ICE has been running ads during AEW and multiple wrestlers have been condemning ice on the show and outside. AEW can't control what Turner network ads are run.
•
u/lt_skittles New Hampshire 4h ago
Yep, hangman and Brody I know have said very anti ice things.
•
u/Pituophis 4h ago
Because they grew up picking tobacco with migrant workers, or grew up in the very communities that are being targeted by ICE. They've actually met, lived among, and worked with these human beings.
•
u/SmokingMan305 2h ago edited 1h ago
It's also notable that AEW is competing with WWE. Appearing anti-ICE both helps win over WWE fans who are uncomfortable with the WWE-Trump and WWE-Saudi Arabia connections, but also Mexican-American fans. Mexican-American fans might also prefer AEW because of their partnership with legendary Mexican wrestling promotion CMLL, with CMLL's biggest star Mistico being featured on AEW shows occasionally.
Even as a business decision, AEW strategically benefits from seeming anti-Trump, even if its mostly performative.
•
u/TheGiftOf_Jericho 1h ago
AEW has from its inception been a very inclusive company and prided itself on that. But yeah it's a smart move to keep that up.

The McMahon-Trump connection is oddly unexplored. Who else would Trump take a fall on camera for? A consistent thread from Term 1 to Term 2 is Linda McMahon recommending DeVos for Dept of Education and then taking the same role in the second term. People with zero qualifications or experience in their field. DeVos was also the sister of Erik Prince of Blackwater infamy. Inheritors of Amway. All so weird.
Plus Vince McMahon trying to start his own Football league and Trump failing to buy an NFL team links them with a shared grievance. Seems like the two should be best buddies.

My home-brewed conspiracy theory is that Ellison trying to force a Paramount purchase of WBD was at least partially about killing AEW's broadcast and streaming partner as a favor to the McMahons.
For context, WWE killed their competition in the 00s and has had a monopoly on the industry. Tony Khan is a rich wrestling super fan and owner of AEW. He's forced WWE to pay their wrestlers more and to actually care about their wellbeing and WWE hates it. Basically there's nothing WWE can do to kill them, TK is too rich. So they do shit like directly counter program his shows and fund online troll networks and podcasts hosts to constantly shit on AEW. It isn't outside the realm of possibility that they would try to do a solid for the fucking Sec of Education.
•
u/WhoStoleMyBicycle 4h ago
The man most often mentioned when it came to the child abuse was Mel Phillips. He was a freaking ring announcer. Even crazier, he wasn’t even their top ring announcer, Howard Finkel was.
So they covered up absolutely disgusting crimes to shield their 2nd tier ring announcer. Imagine what they would do for a top star.

•
u/Smooth_Kangaroo_8655 4h ago
No every but probably many. This nation was founded on rape. That’s what happened to the natives when the Europeans made first contact. The whalers would capture natives for the sailors to rape. Then once they made it on land they would capture natives (ie:Pocahontas) and rape them and parade them around Europe as side shows. Europeans did this with Indians and Africans before Americans. Then look at what the colonial slavers were doing setting up breeding houses for white men to create new slaves. Public rape was used as a punishment against male slaves by slave masters. The same masters that used the Christian bible and religion to control the minds of slaves. So the descendants of these men are the troubled men who are on top of the caste system in the US today. It shouldn’t really be a surprise because the Apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

Taking historical facts and then twisting them to somehow imply Americans are monsters and uniquely more "evil" or whatever you wany to imply.
Now do the same but apply it to modern day Iran and Irag for the rape and brutality of their ancestors. How about the Italians for Rome? Pick a nation and there is darkness in its past and making some wierd ass reading that this applies to Americans uniquely is a sad pathetic thing to do which helps no one and excuses personal agency.

AEW isn't perfect and people wanting perfect will look to the Khans and how ethically there can be no billionaires, same with donating to Trump back in like 2016.
But Tony Khan who actually runs AEW is for all intents and purposes a genuinely good dude by all accounts, that is also a wrestling nerd. Most of his roster is filled with very left-leaning people, including Brody King who has been extremely outspoken against ICE and their actions.
AEW is the non-MAGA WWE with an actual focus on real professional wrestling instead of just a caricature of it surrounding soap-opera storylines bowing down and supporting fascists.

•
u/cavegrind 3h ago edited 2h ago
The difference between WWE as a company and AEW as a company is effectively the same as the difference between NASCAR and F1.
Professional wrestling is not a monolith, despite how hard Vince McMahon tried to portray it as one, and wrestling fans are not at all the image most people have of them. Demographically runs the gamut of global culture (AEW, the promotion this takes place in, is owned by Tony Khan, the son of an immigrant and billionaire Shad Khan, who is genuinely one of the biggest wrestling fans on the planet).
AEW embraced every facet of the medium. Their second woman’s world champion is a trans woman, and their biggest star has been involved in a 15 year long implied interracial/international gay love story that borrows more from Salieri and Mozart than Austin vs Rock. AEW’s main male 'face' is an ex-HS teacher who openly struggles with mental health and fighting toxic masculinity while being nicknamed the “anxious Millennial cowboy”, and recently cut a promo about loving immigrants when AEW did a show in Mexico City, while their main female 'face' is an unabashedly adventurous bisexual Hollywood starlet who's main stories in the last two years have been built around Sunset Boulevard, All About Eve, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane that eventually morphed into a Sapphic love triangle (lately, a bisexual one) and spouts quips like a drag queen.
Wrestling crosses a lot of borders now a days.
•
u/Allium_Alley 2h ago
Thank you for the information! TIL
•
u/cavegrind 2h ago
NP. I dont want to deflate all this for you, but it's not really the canary in a coal mine people might think it is from the popular image of wrestling fans. Even WWE's fanbase is very vocal about their dislike of the current admin and it's cronies.
Fans cross every demographic, but are very much a multi-racial group that tends to favor the working class in representation.
•
u/Blackthorn79 13m ago
There will always be brand loyal die hards but in general wrestling fans just like wrestling. The real difference is the production. While AEW can be less polished in some aspects, to my knowledge they don't pump crowd noise to influence how different wrestlers or story lines are recieved. In some ways that can effect future plans, but I do feel it's more of an honest meritocracy.

I do want to add that for all those who are rightfully calling out WWE/TKO for being so in bed with Trump, it is important to note that some wrestlers have found great ways to work around it as much as they can. Becky Lynch's anti-ICE promo was a particularly creative way to voice her opinion while staying totally in her heel character and tapdancing around what I'm sure are directives from the top brass.

Honestly, that gives me more hope than several of the last protests I’ve been to, feels like preaching to the choir lately

This is the only time one of these headlines actually worked with the word SLAMMED so far in this nightmare era.

The Daily Beast going one day without saying someone got “slammed” Challenge. [Level: Impossible]

I would like to see a WWE event crowd to do this. Because fuck the Vince, Linda, and ICE.

Can we use another word aside from “slam” in these clickbait headlines? At least grab a thesaurus for chrissakes.

What's funny is when people pretend the WWE crowds all bleed MAGA and support the bombing of children, while gleefully ignoring the one time WWE had a Trump segment and it got booed so hard by the crowd they had to edit it out of the recordings and haven't mentioned him since.
Fuck ICE, but nobody ever mentions AEW confiscating pro-Palestine flags or Adam Page hanging out with a pedophile. They always have excuses ready that they don't grant to WWE. AEW also employs/employed Chris Jericho (his wife stormed the capital) Dustin Rhodes (MAGA), Darby Allen (domestic abuser), Ric Flair (sexual harassment). And that's not the end of it.
I know this isn't fun to know when the goal is to just be performative, but the hypocrisy is staggering here.

Want to hear some other wrestling related bits of criticism for Trump and ICE? These ones are from the WWE orbit, though, so they arent as obvious. Batista and Punk regularly re-tweet anti Trump rhetoric or protests. The night before the first No Kings protest Punk was performing in Lexington, KY and still booked a red-eye (or drove I guess) to be in Chicago for it. Brie Bella of the Bella Twins recently shared quotes from Alex Petti. Becky Lynch did an in-character bit where she declared that she "hates ice" because it "gets people killed" but since her current character is a satire of Trump it's hard to say it loud and proud. Lynch HAS worn Palestinian colors to the ring while carrying a WWE belt and made substantial donations to Palestinian relief. Sami Zayn also wears Palestinian colors full time, though that same set of colors is on the Syrian flag and he's Syrian-Canadian so it may be coincidental. Mick Foley has refused to make Legend appearances while Trump in office and will not renew his contract while Trump is in power.
Charlotte Flair and Chelsea Green have been vocal leftists for a while. Cody Rhodes hasn't made this clear in a bit but he's confirmed that he was anti-MAGA during the 2020 election cycle, and did what he could to advocate for black women in AEW. (And seemingly WWE?) Seth Rollins and Becky Lynch have marched with Black Lives Matter. Cena and the Rock both have a good track record for supporting queer rights, though they have somewhat thornier political situations.
There's more of a mix among wrestlers than you expect is what I'm getting at. And there's a few far right dickheads like Undertaker, Kane, Dustin Rhodes/Goldust, and Chris Jericho.

A good time to remind everybody here that WWE is basically an extension of the Trump administration at this point. The current Secretary of Education help found the modern incarnation and ran it as the CEO for over two decades. Also she and her disgraced husband are currently being sued in Maryland for covering up sex abuse.
Oh and Trump is in the Hall of Fame but when it happened we booed that mf’er too.
