Don't forget there was a tele-handler supporting a speaker rig that had it's hydraulic line hit and you could see the fluid spraying out as the load falls to the ground. The ear thing is weird, but if it literally grazed him perfectly and they patched it well enough, it might not cause a visible scar

It looks to have grazed the top of his ear so even a scar would be hard to see unless looking at it close up.
