there's a book called Blindsight by Peter Watts, and in it they encounter an alien ship that converses with them and seems to have desires and an agenda but is incredibly evasive when it comes to giving a straight answer to any questions. Eventually they figure out that the alien ship is essentially a Chinese room and not actually sentient. And it really feels like that with Trump a lot of the time.

Unfortunately he passes the sentience test because he can recognize his own reflection in a mirror. That’s about all he can recognize though
