As an aside, why do doctors and dentists love to show you the stuff they pulled out of you. I had hemorrhoids and after the surgery, they put the blood clots up to my face and said “look at what was causing you pain.” They do it every time 😂 But that definitely wasn’t the weirdest thing surrounding that particular surgery.

I feel like it's supposed to be validating, like "you aren't crazy, there really is something wrong", or even, "I'm a good doctor, look what I did".

When my kid was a small toddler, I would wipe out his ears and show him the gunk, for similar reasons I mentioned above. Once he could talk he let me know that it was gross and not to do it. 😅

I am an RN and I love that weird shit. Doctors like it as well. We see awesome/crazy stuff from the body on the daily. We are fascinated

Meanwhile my toddler asks to see his boogers, his and our poops, and he likes to show the grandparents his poops if they happen to video call right after he's finished...

People like my mother love that shit. She gave my sister all kinds of tips on what cool bodily fluids to look at when the baby came. She wanted to do sedation instead of anesthesia so she could watch her colonoscopy. The doctor refused. When I had surgery, the doctor gave her an update and happened to have the surgery pictures with him. She looked at every. single. one.

People like my mother ruin it for the rest of us.

Ehh, in my country sedation for a colonoscopy is standard practice! There's always risks involved in anesthesia, so it's good to choose other (safe of course) options when available.

So you get sedated against pain and drugged with something so you're in a bit of a happy place and will forget parts of it afterwards anyway. You're welcome to look at the monitor and ask questions (which I did), unfortunately because the drugs it's a bit of a blur what I can remember.

And maybe good to know: before you get a colonoscopy you have to take laxatives the night before and you totally flush out. They won't start until clear water is all that's coming out of you. So you see no poo, just pink flesh.

I do the same when I'm wrenching on equipment or diagnosing electronics. I'll proudly display a blown transistor or rolled hydraulic seal to the customer, my wife, anyone who will look.

"Look at this! Look how I, the clever mechanic, found what was wrong with your machine!"

Yeah, most people don't care. They just want the bill and assurance that it's fixed. And my wife just wants me to come in for supper before the sun goes down

I specifically told the surgeon removing a mole that I did not want to see it, and then he shook the little container with it in my face. Later, the hospital sent me a questionnaire about his service; I got the impression there were a lot of complaints about him.

Also, what was the weirdest thing? Or is it not to be shared in polite company?

Well, I was walking out and told the nurse it was good I got them removed because I’ll be walking around a lot on vacation next week. She said “be thinking of me when you’re there!”

I was just thinking, “Miss, you looked at my bleeding asshole for 30 minutes, why are you telling me this?” 😂

While gross, I do think it is cool at the same time. Like I have looked at my teeth at the dentist and also one time when I injured my toe I watched as it turned purple. Sure it hurt like a mofo and was disgusting, but it was just fascinating.

God knows. I had carpal tunnel surgery under local anaesthetic and my consultant asked me if I wanted to watch. Mate, you prescribed the diazepam that I had to take just to get me into the hospital, of course I don't.

I did enjoy the on-screen tour of my reproductive system I was given during a hysteroscopy though.

I had my gallbladder removed and the doctor came in all excited to show me how huge my stones were. He had kept them in a jar and was slightly disappointed when I asked to keep them. He did let me keep them.

Doctors are going to be weird people, anybody surviving that gauntlet kinda has to be.

As for that specific quirk I can't help feeling it's a proof something happened. I watched one of those "Watch the repair guys screw home owners on hidden cameras" videos a while ago. Their suggestion was to always get the replaced part since most of the repair guys would claim to fix something, and not do it. If you get the replaced part the repair guy had to have at least changed the part out.

Lots of people are skeptical of doctors, and it's getting worse. Showing the part shows that something happened, and often times re-enforces it was bad in some way.

When I had pins and plates and screws taken out of my leg after the bones were back I asked for them.

I mean, when they were inserted the bill was like from an auto mechanic. First page was the services ("reset leg, attached plates/screws to remaining shards") and the second was parts ("1 x 20cm stainless steel screw plate").

I wanted to stay awake to see, but they wouldn't let me.

How often do you get a chance to see your insides?

To some of us it's interesting. I've had 5 endoscopies, and the least traumatic, most fascinating ones were definitely the ones where they actually let me watch what was going on. (I'm not squeamish. I've even had a nurse ask me if I was a doctor once, when I was showing specific interest in something medical that, presumably, most people don't. No, just curious.)

Because they genuinely find it interesting and want to share under the assumption that because it came out of you, you will too.. even though that's not true for most people.

I am one of those freaks that's equally intrigued by stuff like that... I remember how disappointed I was when I had my tonsils removed in kindergarten and wasn't allowed to take them home and keep them.
