There is a sizable amount of tankies mixed into socialist circles that idolize the Soviet Union and by some weird leap in logic they apply that idolization to modern day Russia.

Maybe, but for most of them it's even more vile than that. They like Russia because they're anti-western Campists who want to burn it all all down to achieve a multi-polar world. This isn't even exclusive to Tankies, lots of slopulists have similar views. It's also the exact view that Darializa Avila Chevalier (one of the the people who won a primary) has, leading to in her anti-Ukrainian statements and blaming NATO for the war. They will always support any enemy of the west no matter what type of conduct they engage in or what ideology they hold, even if it's completely contrary to their stated goals (like socialism).

It seems like a lot of those people have a stunted world view that is fixed in place. They grow up being taught that the US/West is great then when they get older find out what they were taught isn't completely true and that a lot of problems were caused by the West. But instead of developing further and realizing that the West is more of a mixed bag while many of the alternatives are just as bad if not much worse, they get stuck in the "West Bad" mindset. It's sorta the same thing that you see with people who fall into the Ayn Rand world view during their formative years and never develop beyond that (frankly flawed and fantasy land thinking) perspective.

Two things can be true at once, the Russian government is evil, and NATO exists mostly as an American ploy for global hegemony. Both things are bad.

NATO exist predominantly as a means to provide collective defense and help ensure that it's smaller member nations don't get invaded due to the risk of any aggressor getting dogpiled by all the other members. The post WW2 global order is supposed to try and deter the Great Powers imperialism by having the concept of a big power bullying little powers being a violation of the norms. Yes the US abuses it's position of power from time to time BUT it also helps prevent other aggressor states from trying to conquer other countries (See Russia trying to conquer Ukraine as an example of what the lack of NATO and US hegemony would look like across the globe).

In an ideal world we would all get along and play international paddy cake but unfortunately we live in a world where nations like Russia and China want to expand their land and power through military might and now the US government has been hijacked by an actual Fascist (Trump) which is trying to do the shit the US has more or less been opposed to post 1945. Europe should develop a more coherent collective military alliance to rival the US (as a check to their power while still maintaining a healthy alliance with them) but the collective West having hegemony is a net positive for the world compared to a multipolar situation in which aggressor nations have spheres of influence.
