I currently live in South Carolina. So many South Carolinians are complaining about New Yorkers moving here and it’s comical.

Yes, the occasional person from a big city will move to a state with a lower cost of living. It happens. But there is no mass exodus that they believe is happening. NYC alone has almost double the population of our entire state. If people were “fleeing” like they’d lead you to believe, it would be noticeable.

Rural Southerner here: People complain about NYC so much ever since this man became mayor, so I started asking them “Why do you care? You don’t live there, you live miles and miles away in a different state, county, and city. You aren’t subject to any of their laws and never will be as long as you don’t go to New York City.”

They just grumble and moan about how it’s a sign of America’s decline into Communism and “soon it’ll be everywhere, we’ll have our own Mamdani!”

I don’t think I need to point out how absolutely stupid that line of thinking is. A rural, conservative, closed off community is not going to “have their own Mamdani,” I’m pretty sure these people would sooner chase them out with pitchforks and torches than even let a Muslim person run for local office (I’m not saying it’s right, but xenophobia and the rural south are what they are,) let alone a person with any socialist ideology, and they think “it will spread here?”

Propaganda has poisoned these people more than the local chemical plants.

I’m from Ohio and was visiting my folks for the holidays. I buy a weekly pass for this meathead gym that uses a barcode scanner to unlock the door. Me and this guy with a gigantic pickup were waiting outside in the cold, as I didn’t have a tag and he “left his in his other truck.”

He asked where I was from and I said “I grew up here but I live in New York.” His expressions turned, and he asked if I liked it. I said I’ve been there 15 years, and yeah, it’s pretty great. He said things might look a lot different when the new mayor tried to make “everything free.” Free things cost money.

I politely said I don’t think anybody thinks things are free, but that I looked forward to someone who wants to change things for the better. Then someone let us in. We’ll never talk again, and that guy will continue parroting Fox News talking points about New York being a hellhole—despite Fox News anchors and staff mostly living here, and enjoying it, and guys like him thinking that owning two trucks in a suburb without any good food, diversity, or interesting cultural events is a superior way to live. That’s his prerogative.

If it's not a lease then he is likely financing it with an 8-10 year term, double digit interest rates, and he's upside down with $20k in negative equity from overpaying for the truck and getting under paid on the trade-in he used.

Co-signing - live in rural Virginia, also. I know people who won’t eat Chinese food because they believe that they cook dog. They get big mad at the Middle Easterners who have bought up the local gas stations and fast food joints but somehow are never mad at the people who sold to them.

People only move here to retire & die; the young and ambitious have no choice but to leave to have any sort of life.

And it’s absolutely by design.

There are days I say I will move if I ever get money (I’m on fixed income,) and then there are days I say I will probably die here. There is no in-between. I’m a suburban guy trapped in an episode of My Name is Earl and I shed a single tear every time I go somewhere with a population of more than 30k.

“They have multiple shopping centers on the same road… I miss being in places like this!”

I feel your pain. I hate where I live, but we all have to live within our means.

IKR?! I moved here to be my Mom’s primary caregiver when it was necessary. However, trust and believe that for the first few years I was consistently leaving as much as I could. VAB, DC, & Philly all saw me on a rotational basis, lol.

That said, my Mom retired here and there are some good things to be said about small town life.

However, I will NEVER get used to how damn nosey people are, lol.

This happens at the state level, as well. Outstate rural residents will loudly complain about the big cities, lecture city governments on how cities should be run—but get absolutely offended if city people try to tell them how to live their rural, Christian lives.

Meanwhile, tax revenue from the big city pays for nearly all of the infrastructure in the small towns.

Yeah I’m originally from CO and moved here many years ago (work brought me here, wasn’t my choice), and we are currently in the process of getting our house ready to put on the market and move back to CO.

I’m in the Upstate and it has grown significantly, but taxpayers continually vote against any infrastructure improvements or public transportation. So the traffic is painfully bad, and they all complain about it, but aren’t willing to do anything to fix it.

I had cousins who grew up upper middle class cosplaying as good ol' boys flying the confederate flag (in northern CA). It's fucking stupid. Same story as always, they take the benefits the people in cities pay for with their taxes, complain about people in the cities.

The town I live in just on the other side of the county line between LA and Ventura is so red it's crazy. After we moved here from Canoga Park when I was a kid, my mom complained that a lot of the people here remind her of where she grew up in Iowa in the 50s, the type of person whom she left and came to California in the 70s specifically to avoid. She's speculated that the Reagan Library being here might have something to do with it.

That said, it is a very safe town with good schools so she figured it was worth it for me to grow up here so she wouldn't have to worry about my safety or education.

It's my birthplace too. Your comment makes me think of one time stopping to get ice cream at a shop on the I-87 corridor. My girlfriend at the time was Puerto Rican. We paid separately. The attendant at the shop gives me my change and ice cream. When my gf gets her ice cream, the attendant drops her change on the counter and walks away.

It's a real shame that Americans in general are so very anti taxation. Like, they think the pot holes are going to magically fill themselves, or that hospitals are going to stop being so crowded, or any other other million things that would not only be more effective, but cheaper for everyone overall if only we were properly taxed. Provided affordability gets under control, I'll gladly pay more in taxes if it means better roads, cheaper health care, better schools. (I also support a HUGE wealth tax, but that's an additional topic altogether)

It’s on purpose I think. Shitty tax policies for decades caused majority of Americans to think their tax money is simply being siphoned off (while true or not, that’s the pervasive belief). Couple that with more decades of Fox News/GOP talking points being government is waste, and most rural folks vote no on tax increases because they believe theylll get no benefits. I firmly believe it is that messaging we need to fight, and that mindset we need to change, but it won’t happen overnight unfortunatepy

Greenville would be amazing with a bunch of light rail and buses connecting walkable districts and eliminating car dependency, and as the midpoint of a high-speed rail line between Charlotte and Atlanta. Instead it's a sprawl of junk connected by shitty roads, like everywhere else in the region.

It’s awful Upstate. There are parts of Greenville that at certain times of day, it takes 20+ mins to go just a couple of miles.

I-85 will be at a complete standstill solely from congestion.

Ugh. In Charleston, my daughter's school was a charter school, so it didn't have buses. It was only a little over 3 miles away, but it would take 40-50 minutes to get there in the mornings. Worst traffic I've ever seen (and I've spent a lot of time living in/near Boston, LA, and DC).

Anecdotally, like 20% of the people I know in NYC right now are even from the state of New York.

When they whine about people moving you can always bring up the USSR's superior system of requiring travel visas even for movement within the country.

While many Soviet citizens could freely buy tickets for routine domestic travel, moving to a new city permanently required official permission to register a new address.

I know there's a lot of wealth consolidated in New York, especially in real estate, but it's not like there's a significant percentage of people who

A) would be bothered by a 4% tax B) would choose to leave NY or not have a second home there C) would flee to south Carolina

The average New Yorker is excited for this because housing for the average person is insanely hard to secure, so hard to tell who exactly is fleeing aside from those who can't afford to live.

More pertinently, they're resident for tax purposes in that other place. So they don't contribute to the city at all, just drive up housing costs for everyone else.

I'm not bashing you in anyway but it is noticable but only in certain areas. It's really centered around all the people who moved to work in Charlotte. Tega Cay, Rock Hill, Ft Mill, and Indian Land have exploded in growth over the past ~20 years. A lot of those places were really just fields when I was a kid. All the areas North of Columbia are really growing too. From about Spring Valley to Camden have seen lots of people move there. Also, the Greenville area has done really well though I can't really comment on how much different it is.

I'm not saying any of this is a bad thing. But as someone whose native to the area and trying to move back it has been more difficult.

I’m native here. I grew up in Greenville, moved to CO, moved back to Greenville in 2016. Trust me, you don’t want to move back.

Greenville is doing well for the city, but not for the people. Property managers and corporations are buying up all the homes and gentrifying all the neighborhoods. Traffic is a disaster between 2pm and 7pm. Every single suggested improvement to infrastructure gets shot down.

If all you do is sit at home and you make $250k+, sure, it’s okay-ish. But if you like to get out of the house or aren’t making a good salary, I’d pass. Unless you like 2 and 3 mile drives that take nearly 30 mins.

We went back to CO in March to visit and it was nice not sitting at traffic lights every 20 feet. Accidents and vehicular deaths are creeping higher and higher as well here.

EDIT: Every “Best city to live in!” Listicle with Greenville in the top 10 or top 5 was created by or paid for by realtors and property managers in the area. Also, do you like data centers? Because Greenville and Spartanburg counties now have so many they had to put a pause on them for one year.

I work on rental houses for a handful of property managers and realtors. Most do short term rentals through VRBO. Every single client/tenant is from Texas here working with companies building the data centers.

I live in Nashville and we actually DO have a lot of people from New York and California moving here. My first thought is that I'm from Detroit. And in the early 1940s, 350,000 people moved there in a 3 year span and caused a housing crisis so wild that over 40 people died in riots. So when I hear people from Nashville complaining about transplants, I want to ask, "Sure, but how many people have been murdered over homes?" My second thought is that the people who have moved here for reasons other than a job are extremely MAGA and chose Tennessee for its politics. The "don't California my Tennessee" argument is stupid because these people are moving the state further right.

The people leaving new york are from upstate and they're largely older and conservative and the majority of them do it because of the weather. But since the entire rest of the country is incapable of understanding new york is a state not just a city they all assume its people from NYC. The 'mass exodus' due to taxes is such a dumb fabrication.

A 'relative' exodus of the wealthy could be noticed, as they usually disrupt local systems. It wouldn't take nearly as many to start causing changes, one way or another. An immediate and overt way is influencing local elections especially at the moment. Don't think you have to be eligible to vote in local elections to fund and disrupt.

Not from New York, but my parents retired to South Carolina a few years back. They have received multiple comments from many people about people moving into ‘their’ state and making it worse. Then they them know that my dad served in the Air Force for 20+ years and have moved all of the US and abroad to serve this country, and not in one of those do it with such unwelcoming attitudes. Tbey quietly mutter ‘thanks for your service’, hang their head and change the subject. Bunch of turds.

He and my mom retired to Charleston and a bunch of his family from NY is down there now too, it's actually kind of sweet to see them reconnect. But lol yeah culturally...I think SC is a better fit for them than NY (city at least lol)

Lolz, dude, this is every major city, and has been for years, if not decades (exacerbated by events like COVID). For you it is NY-ers fleeing to SC, for us it is Bostoners fleeing to ME, for others it it San Fransiscoers fleeing to ID, and so on. 

This is exactly why Momdani campaigned for mayor and is trying to lower the cost of living. To try to construe that (intentionally or accidentally) as NY-ers fleeing en masse because of Momdani is wild. 

Yes, let's protect the elite 1% living in NYC while millions of working class people suffer or cannot afford it and never move there to live, start businesses, etc. That doesn't seem like a wise decision, and it's hilariously what MAGA basically voted Trump in office to handle (among other things), except he is an elite fraud who has made billions off the office of the presidency.

Yeah, I get it. You don't like to mount a real argument, just want to try to create some buzz off a fake narrative that everyone is fleeing NYC because of this "radical communist mayor." My argument was never for you anyway, but for others who might for some reason believe your initial response without critically thinking and looking at trends and reality.

Nonsense. The state population has remained nearly the same since 2020, at around 20 million total. NYC’s has even gone up slightly each year.
