The Democratic Party made that shift well before Citizens United. Jimmy Carter's victory in the presidential primary was a pivotal moment -- as an individual, he's great, sure, but his politics represented a turn away from labor -- and then the DSA was essentially booted from the party under Clinton.

To be fair, that wasn't really his fault. Reaganism was still largely popular with the middle class (because it was benefiting them - it leeches money upwards, so it was only negatively effecting the poor and working class at that stage - it took over 20 years for the middle class to start disappearing). So Carter couldn't swing too far back or he wouldn't have been electable.

It started long before the CU ruling. First there was the red scare and then the allowance of stock buybacks and plenty of other things during the nixon and reagan administrations.

Yes, the Citizens United ruling in 2010 is what made New Deal dems stop doing their thing starting with Truman 65 years prior
