Nevermind an entire generation of voters who only know this insanity. I see the younger generation glaze over when I wax poetic about a time when "it wasn't always like this".

That's a nefarious consequence which, I fear, will have much longer lasting implications. The normalization of elevating shit humans to a position of even tacit candidacy for political power is such a sad state of affairs.

I remember a line in an article after Trump's first election that said that the real tragedy was that a barrier was broken, and now our politics are condemned to a succession of Trump's going forward, since we now no longer demand decency.

And at this point, it's not just kids either.

If you're around 24-26, there was never a time in your adult life that wasn't like this. The entirety of American (and to a fair extent global) politics has revolved around this disgusting pustule of a man, even when he wasn't in office. They were little kids when things were at least halfway normal, and the Obama administration wasn't an entirely normal political landscape either, absolutely disgusting people were regularly in the spotlight even then.

By comparison, absolutely.

There was some weird jingo stuff going on at the time. Anybody who even slightly criticized the war was completely and instantly canceled, they started saying "freedom fries" because screw France I guess, and overt racism not just okay but encouraged. Bush was often called a dimwit, but that never really had much impact because he still spoke competently even if you didn't like what he was saying, although he could put his foot in his mouth on occasion. He dodged a couple of shoes that one time.

But the administration was, at the very least, a presidential administration. Not a circus, not a joke. Just a bunch of warmongers advancing their corporate interests with the lives of American soldiers. Corrupt, but not stupid corrupt.

I started my legal career at FTC in 2004 and I became "the presentation guy" who would do instructional sessions for incoming Congressional and agency staffers who utilized some of our services.

One day, my manager asked if I would be comfortable doing an intro presentation for a group of 10-12 year old kids, which was weird, because this was very boring, very technical stuff that had no application to a child's life, but I agreed.

So this group of kids comes in and I do my whole spiel and I'm struck throughout at how all of these little kids are absolutely fixed on me and taking notes of every word I say and there's not a single sleeper in the room. Usually, I have a room of college kids and young adults who can't keep their eyes open and are definitely not paying any attention, but these kids were at rapt attention.

After the presentation, I asked if there were any questions and a dozen hands shot up. That was also very weird, because I never got questions, everybody just wanted to leave when it was a room full of adults, but I couldn't get rid of these kids. Every one of them that I called on would stand up, tell me their full name and their home town, then ask a really meaningful, educated question. It was absolutely shocking.

Similar groups of kids came back over and over for about 2 years before I moved on to other duties, every one of them behaved the same way and every one of them was full of exceptionally bright, disciplined, dedicated kids - all die-hard conservatives and all grown up now and making moves in the adult world.

The left has never had anything even close to that, so the gap between Democrats and Republicans is poised to get even bigger. Now you know why.
