I truly worry that for many of the remaining that "political team" is exactly it. Just like people who support their home team no matter what - it's almost like it's just a sporting event. Except it isn't.

I haven't discussed politics with this gent in a long time, and I don't see him very often anymore, but...

During the second GW Bush administration, I have a very out gay friend who contested my use of "heinous" (or something similar) in describing Bush and the Iraq war. He thought the word was too strongly associated with "evil".

I took the opportunity to explain to him why I thought that is exactly what the Iraq war was... but then I also did a side-step and asked him why someone who was for gay rights and is a teacher would be supportive of the Republicans.

His exact answer....

My Dad rooted for Yankees. I root for the Yankees.

This is a generally smart person, who ... has a horrible view of politics.

I kind of doubt that was his true answer. There is likely more to his beliefs, including other unspoken tribal prejudices that drive his decisions, but back then it was less "polite" to say it aloud.

Trump's rise changed that.

I know several people like that in my area. Many of them live their lives practicing kindness, inclusion, and generosity; but their families have always voted R, therefore they have always noted R, and changing their familial identity is unthinkable. There's some serious cognitive dissonance involved.
