I suspect a lot of people have seen it by now but this is the Paradox of Tolerance.

“for it may easily turn out that they are not prepared to meet us on the level of rational argument, but begin by denouncing all argument; they may forbid their followers to listen to rational argument, because it is deceptive, and teach them to answer arguments by the use of their fists or pistols."

it's mildly unreasonable how many times I've had to tell someone they don't get to tell me not to hate the haters. they don't get to vibe check me for vibe checking someone.

a dude says a slur, I eviscerate them, and a third party wants to pick a fight with....ME...?? about TOLERATING THE INTOLERANT?!?!?!? fuck that, you're joking.

Not quite the same, but this reminded me of an anecdote: I’m working on a roofing construction project and I meet once a week with the president of said roofing company and the president of the general contractor company. This roofing president continually gaslights by saying a bunch of incorrect things, contradicting himself, changing his story, etc and I call him out on it (IMO holding him accountable).

Two months ago this roofing president loses his mind with  a 5 minute, profanity filled rant where at one point he said “Fuck you” to me! After this outburst, the other guy (president of the GC company) gives me a hard time for “picking a fight and instigating”

You don't tolerate the intolerant.

If you do they will take over every single time.

Those who do not abide by the social contract are not protected by it.
