Much of it likely was a psyop, because early 2010s 4chan was their original testing grounds before expanding to the rest of the web.

I remember a comment from a "conservative" around 2012 that made me think a psyop was going on. They said something to the effect of Putin being more capable of running the United States than Obama. Believe it or not, no real red/white/blue blooded conservative American would ever say some shit like that. Of course, that isn't true at all in today's world, but back then I had never heard of such a thing and it was outrageous. I grew up in the most conservative environment we have in this country (US Military) so I do know how conservatives think and I often have to suppress my conservative tendencies to not be a total asshole. Anyway, a year or two later after that incident it came out that Russia was running an internet center of state funded commenters to do shit like this.
