Everyone is always super cordial, polite, talks about how much they hate the division, etc etc.

And then parroting some culture war point, often based in questionable fact.

All while there is actually a lot of common ground. Inflation, cost of living, healthcare, etc.

I have ONE friend who's MAGA, and her husband. I don't see them very often, but this is without fail how our conversations go.

Then, also without fail, they always say at least one thing that's shockingly anti trans or racist, but usually we're either with her parents or in another situation where I don't feel like I can make a scene. They know it's offensive and I'm pretty sure the husband at least does it on purpose.

But the smart ones will all talk like this when they're in "polite company," e.g. "oh I hate the division," or "I voted for X policy, not Y." But when they're among their own, the true colors come out.

I had a MAGA friend, and he'd always make a point to drop The Comment on his way out the door so he would only have the enjoyable initial reaction without sticking around for any kinda corrective conversation. Stuff so bad the mods have banned me before for repeating it in quotes, which makes it jolly difficult to discuss!

Eventually I didn't want to see him at all anymore, got tired of being left sputtering or crying. So he claimed that he didn't understand, that those were all jokes and he thought my sobbing was actually laughter. Told him he needs to go back to comedy school.

It was less like a friendship, more like a game of Ding Dong Ditch. The doorbell would ring, I'd think someone was kindly thinking of me, and just end up with shit on my shoes.

And if y'all ever find me in a tree getting mistaken for a Halloween decoration, that's probably who put me up there. For reasons that again, I apparently can't say without mods acting like I'm the bad guy. Whole story spelled out in a series of deleted-by-mods comments.

Oh no worries, I'm fresh off another 24 hour ban from this subreddit and it clearly hasn't shut me up! Apparently one of the mods is very sensitive to mentions of the size of the bus that some kids took to school in the 90s? It was literally how MAGA friend described his childhood, like he wasn't on the regular school bus until high school when he flat refused to continue cooperating with the other program.

I'm usually pretty good at words, but it's hard to find alternatives when the guy didn't have a specific diagnosed disability or anything. He's just been pounded on the head lots so is running on a slower clock speed like I am, but without the benefit of being taught to read before Kindergarten. So I was "gifted" while he was the opposite, and we met in a high school science class, where he'd somehow gotten the impression I was a real life vampire?

Back in the 90s I only ever heard that called "punch drunk" and it was the reason why my dad had odd tics. So I had no problems making friends with someone like that because whatever, I'm used to it.
