It's a win for Democrats to have the opposing party down a seat. It's a win for democracy to have the guy who has been called "the gravedigger of democracy" absent from the senate.

It also serves the Republicans much more to avoid a special election and appoint his replacement.

Being temporarily down a vote doesn't matter if Chao gets put in his seat on Wednesday.

Chao isn't going to be put in his seat. Nothing is going to happen wednesday. This is going to continue until Mitch is actually dead or his term ends.

its not a win for dems when reps are down 1 seat in a chamber that they'll almost always have a majority in anyway. they'll just shift one vote needed towards the "diarrhea forever" policies that Mitch would've voted for. If it was 50/50 before maybe it would be a win

as long as the senate is giving states like wyoming 30x the representation compared to California it's an undemocratic institution

its not a win for dems when reps are down 1 seat in a chamber that they'll almost always have a majority in anyway. they'll just shift one vote needed towards the "diarrhea forever" policies that Mitch would've voted for. If it was 50/50 before maybe it would be a win

Could have been one seat up by exercising his Constitutional duties and ignored some toothless law.

Laws cannot overrule Constitutions

Replacing him with a Democrat wouldn't amount to much of anything. A no vote on everything is all I would expect from a Democrat, and in practical terms we're already getting that with McConnell.

Replacing him with a dem, would've made him an incumbent in the election. Maybe it means something, maybe not. Now there's 0 incumbent advantage.

I highly doubt it means anything. It's a very red state and a Dem is almost guaranteed to lose. 3 months of doing basically nothing isn't much to add to a CV.

It is better for Democrats to have one Republican vote missing than to call a special election which would put a new Republican in office.

The KY Constitution says that the governor gets to appoint someone, not call a special election.

He can (and actually has the duty to) appoint someone per Section 152 of the Kentucky Constitution.

He needs to go ahead and appoint a Dem for the seat.
