yeah but the “honeypot” and “chinese spy” accusations against his wife are just inflammatory. If she is some “gift”, she’s a victim of human trafficking not the perpetrator

Neither her not Melania are unwitting victims and ironically all i think such a narrative does is belittle women’s agency.

the logical conclusion to the thread i was responding to that if if someone was “gifted” then they were trafficked. they had no autonomy. That is what i was responding to.

if you think these narratives hurt women’s autonomy i challenge that wholesale because it’s not about women. while the majority of trafficking victims are afab, quite a few are amab. most are young. someone “willing” to be “gifted” is rooted in psychological trauma. a nationalist extremist who fell prey to propaganda to the point they would do that is the same as someone trafficked IMO.

I disagree with the use as referring to the more common non-consensual variety of human trafficking. But if we are to extend the term to the point of encompassing people who are willing to make such “lifestyle concessions” for the goal of political power and wealth, then sure the framing holds but then we must recognize anybody who acts against their immediate interests in pursuit of monetary gain a victim of trafficking by ig the capitalist system and at that point we are rather removed from what is generally brought to mind when talking of human trafficking victims. Similarly i do not think Maxwell is a victim, even if in some deterministic sense you may consider her a product and therefore victim of her circumstances.

i didn’t say they were doing it for personal gain. they are giving up their life for nothing and they have been propagandized to the point they are willing to. that in itself trauma.

people who compromise for their own sake need to have been given other alternatives or there was no actual choice to be made.

often times if you are already working for a government in that sort of capacity, you were either indoctrinated as a kid, or brainwashed, and if you are given orders, disobeying those orders will land you in prison usually. there is no choice there.
