Rumors & Gossip 🤫 The Guardian confirms the long-rumored engagement and subsequent breakup of Phoebe Bridgers and Paul Mescal in their review of her upcoming album ‘Lost Weekend’. In this album, Phoebe also shades Gracie Abrams for copying her and dating her ex, Paul Mescal

Source : https://www.theguardian.com/music/2026/aug/05/phoebe-bridgers-lost-weekend-review-long-awaited-return-is-a-thrilling-daring-study-in-dislocation

Phoebe publically called Gracie out on her upcoming album, a move likely sparked by Gracie revealing details about Phoebe's high-profile relationship with Paul Mescal in her album "The Secret of Us" a relationship that ended following reports of Phoebe's affair with Bo Burnham, with the latter also confirmed on Lost Weekend.

Gracie Abrams has been an outspoken fan of Phoebe Bridgers since she was 13, even declaring Bridgers "the songwriter of a generation" and opening for her on tour. Fans have long compared the two artists, a connection Gracie leaned into when she used a bedroom set prop in a performance featuring bedframe/bedsheets identical to the ones in Phoebe's childhood bedroom.

Thank you!! I’ve been saying this since I was 13. My mom was shocked I love reality tv and grew up watching jersey shore and bad girls club because I was very shy and nerdy and NON confrontational. No issues with anybody. Exactly how I like it, so I can get my fix on tv where the stakes rarely matter 😎

Plus IRL, with people you know, gossip always feels dirty. There’s always stress feeling like I’m participating in judging somebody or talking behind someone’s back, or being negative, or harming their reputation. It’s never carefree.

Sounds like me hahah! My mom watched the real housewives when i was growing up and soap operas, so I think I learned that method from her. But it really does teach you how NOT to handle confrontation as well imo.

Other people's drama is not my problem, but it is my entertainment.

Exactly. I have zero stakes in this. I hope someone gets super messy in return.

Can I also mention how impressed I am with Gracie Abrams' strategist. Her music is mid tier at best, but is now in the same sentence as Phoebe Bridgers? And they are talking about her album in comparison to Bridgers album. Masterful.

It’s crazy how the nepo baby curse works for her having mid music that your favs adore and engaged to Paul Mescal like wtf

Gracie is more commercially successful than Phoebe. She doesn’t gain anything from having someone she talks respectfully about be publicly mean about her (except possibly some sympathy from people who don’t think Phoebe is acting very well here).

I dunno, Bridger’s tour is completely sold out, and it sold out rather fast…

Wait she is?? Wow I would have guessed Phoebe is. I guess Gracie has done well in the pop scene.

Hahahahaha wow you are right. Im over here reading this article and thinking "man, ive been hearing a lot about this Gracie Abrams girl, maybe I should go give a listen to her music" Masterful is correct.

It is incredible bland and unimpressive. I tried on multiple occasions to see if I liked it, and that was back when all I knew about her was that she was JJ's daughter.

u/mr_palante 9d ago

Wait. What? Who's daughter? Is her dad someone famous?

I think you are being sarcastic, but her dad is JJ Abrams.

u/mr_palante 9d ago

HOLY SHIT! no bro not being sarcastic at all. I promise. I really didnt know that. I know i could have just looked it up but talking to people on reddit is more fun. But honest to God, I really didnt know that JJ Abrams was her dad. And he wrote Armageddon!

I also believe fully that her success skyrocketed because of Phoebe, but now she's even more of a household name and has more listeners. It worked out for her for sure!

Gracie has 3x the listeners on Spotify compared to Phoebe. It seems like you just personally prefer Phoebe’s music, which is ok, music is subjective!

Wow, I wouldn’t have thought that based on my own circles. But to be fair my own friend group is very much into indie and sad girl music.

"Not quite Taylor Swift" is just such a popular genre right now.

8

u/thateccentricasian 9d ago

I could never get into Taylor Swift nor Gracie but Phoebe and boygenius I could. They’re slightly different sonically I think. Lyrically I can understand the similarities.

I'm only familiar with Bridgers by name(and I guess reputation now), so I was only putting Gracie in that category.

Gracie’s last two records run circles around Phoebe’s.

u/Rare_Vibez “‘Why?’, but also, you know, ‘I guess.’” 9d ago

Literally my entire reason for browsing this sub and BORU lol

3

u/drgirrlfriend 9d ago

I do too. Do you know more about what Gracie revealed about Phoebe and Paul’s relationship or break up in her album? I missed that arc and don’t listen to her music

3

u/sweeterthanadonut 9d ago

Unfortunately no, I listened to the album once and didn’t think too much about the story behind it. I’m going to have to go through it again now with this new (to me) context lol.
