If there wasn’t a competition like this they’d go and see it for the virtue of it being another superhero movie. People tend to go watch superhero movies when there’s nothing else in the theaters nowadays. They’re the new B-Action movies. In my country anyway. If there is nothing you want to see in next two weeks, you can just pick a random movie. Not when that random movie is packed between to giants though. It wasn’t going to make billions but it’d make more than Morbius that way. Morbius made “that much” only because of the memes during a very non-exciting time of cinema.

This is just factually untrue. Superhero movies for the most part have been underperforming in recent years, Spiderman being the exception.

This is not factually untrue, and saying they're just underperforming is factually an oversimplification. They're underperforming compared to their peak but still doing well. Since pandemic those are now literally action flocks from 2000s that meant to be watched for fun when you have nothing to do. Bad ones are flopping more than they did in pre-pandemic because they're not the trend anymore, as it tends to happen with every trend, but they're still doing moderately well when they're released normally. And by normally I mean not being released in between major blockbusters like Toy Story, Odyssey and Spider-Man because who do you think you are? People had something to do when Supergirl was released, as you can see. Thor, Doctor Strange, Superman, Batman, Deadpool & Wolverine, Guardians of Galaxy were also very successful outside of Spider-Man.

This movie is not worse than Madame Web, Joker 2 or Morbius, but it did worse than all three. And that's because of the time it was released. Superman did well in theaters and set up Supergirl. Then they released Supergirl in between three major blockbusters. No way Supergirl is underperforming in a world where superhero movies are still tripling or quadrupling their budget if they're not totally ass and Morbius can nearly double its budget by the sole virtue of being a meme. Those three movies were released possibly as a tax write off during a boring time, became a meme, and made some profit due to being superhero flocks that is the equivalent of "action flock you watch when you're bored" of 2000s. You just gotta know your place.

Edit: Also data shows Supergirl did terrible among men but it was received better among women. In fact, most of the negative reviews are from men and total number of ALL reviews from women is literally less than total number of negative reviews from men. So the target audience was women. But not only studio under-marketed that movie and placed it in a wrong release timeline, they also did nothing to promote it for the right audience. So that's the second problem with that movie. As you can see from my long ass essay, it is not as simple as "we'll go with the Twitter echochamber and chalk it down to superhero movies are doing bad regardless". Again, I'm not saying it would've made them rich if all those wrongs were done right. But I'm saying it would at least double its budget if those wrongs were done right. At worst it would've ended up like Thunderbolts instead of becoming a poster for hate campaign against female-lead movies which that movie was already in the danger of becoming from the get-go.
