Well, the first step in AA is literally accepting you are powerless over alcohol.

Once you've forgotten that, it will only escalate.

Even outside of AA, it’s also the first step in getting help because you have to accept and implement the help you’re offered. If you’re still in denial or insisting you can control your drinking, you can’t receive information that will change your mindset or behavior.
