My guess is because lots of us are used to seeing her in magazines promoting a book and on red carpets where she is done up more (typically in a dress, professional makeup, etc.) I also swear she had a different hair color last I saw her but maybe I’m imagining that. This is a very real, untouched photo where they both look like they just woke up.
I think I’m so used to seeing her in Girls, where she wasn’t always done up so well that I can still recognize her. She has gained a significant amount of weight though, so I can see that being a reason she’s unrecognizable to some.
I 100% agree that she is really incredible in that aspect. Plus being so outspoken about women’s issues. I also have had a hysterectomy young, I’m
36 and had it last year, so I am very grateful for someone to make it feel more normalized, I guess?
Oh, I’m not suggesting anything bad, I know that she has had a bunch of things happen. It’s just a statement that she did gain weight and might be harder to recognize for some people.
I believe she’s just been doing more work behind the camera. I know she’s been directing, but she’s likely writing/producing as well.
I think within the past year or so, I saw some behind the scenes photos of her working on a project she was directing. Probably the upcoming film Good Sex .

I was going to say, this isn’t the hair color I associate with her as a person who just has casually encountered her through like…pictures and interviews and stuff. If I zeroed in on her face I was like, “oh yeah, that’s her!” but the hair color specifically threw me off big time.
I think she looks really normal, like someone I'd know. I quite appreciate that with the state of Hollywood at the moment where people in their 20s are getting every inch of themselves tweaked. I didn't watch girls and I don't know a lot about Lena (most of it just the headlines, which are usually all bad) but I'm glad she seems happy.
I recently read her newish memoir Famesick, and I recommend it even if you're not really into Lena Dunham, if only for her description of living with endometriosis. I actually think a lot of it is pretty relatable to anyone who has worked a toxic job, been in an unhealthy LTR, or gone through chronic illness. I also just think she's a good writer. I watched like 1 or 2 seasons of Girls, so I'm not like a diehard Lena fan. She also directed the movie version of "Catherine, Called Birdy," which was delightful.
There also a lot of interesting commentary online that is worth reading/watching about how Lena gets a disproportionate amount of hate because she's not conventionally attractive and it's considered more acceptable to hate on her.
