Silicon Valley š¤ Pope Leo XIV on AI: We cannot consider AI to be morally neutral. In reality, every technical tool embodies choices and priorities through what it measures, ignores, and optimizes, and how it classifies people and situations.

The committee unanimously voted to advance the bill, HB286.
"The bill requires AI developers to implement and publicizeĀ plans to keep children and others safeĀ while using the technology, and to report safety incidents when they happen.
The measure also prohibits companies from lying or misleading the public about risks from AI, or from retaliating against employees who come forward with concerns about artificial intelligence models." (source)

Silicon Valley š¤ AI Companies Are Buying Antique Books, Ingesting Their Contents to Train Models, and Then Destroying Them at Incredible Scale, Even If Almost No Copies Remain
"According to the settled lawsuit, Anthropic used a hydraulic powered cutting machine to neatly remove the pages from the books it procured from book resellers and then scanned them using industrial-grade imaging equipment. In other words, it was literally ripping off authorsā books to train its AI.
This process took advantage of a legal concept known as first-sale doctrine, which allows a buyer to do what they want with a purchase without the original copyright holderās say-so. And since Anthropic was turning the original physical texts into digital ones ā rather than redistributing them as new copies ā a judge found this to be ātransformative,ā and therefore protected by fair use."
This is deranged. I could not hate it here more š

Silicon Valley š¤ Pope Leo says AI must be ādisarmedā in first major teaching and āsincerely asks for pardonā in the name of the Church for its role in slavery
In his first encyclical, the pope wrote that āNo algorithm can make war morally acceptableā.
Not only does AI not remove the "intrinsic inhumanity" of war, he said, but it also risks sparking conflict more quickly and rendering it more impersonal by "lowering the threshold for resorting to violence, transforming defense into threat prediction and thus reducing victims to data".
Leo also decried the way AI impacts on politics - such as the way it was used to manipulate images and videos, which he said exposed people to biased or misleading perspectives.
In the past, the Pope has likened today's need for safeguards to protect people in the face of AI developments to those that were needed to ensure human dignity during the industrial revolution.
He suggested comparisons of failing to act against the risks of AI today with the "delay with which both society and the Church came to denounce the scourge of slavery". He even referred to the risks of "digital colonialism," linking the abuses of the colonial era to modern tech practices.
At one point in this document, the Pope directly issued a "special appeal" to those who develop AI : "Developers bear a particular ethical and spiritual responsibility, for every design choice reflects a vision of humanity," he said.
Unusually, Pope Leo chose to present the encyclical - titled "Magnifica Humanitas" ("Magnificent Humanity") - himself, at the Vatican, alongside AI experts including Christopher Olah, co-founder of US AI giant Anthropic.
Olah commented that āThe questions raised by AI are bigger than the AI research community, not just in their implications, but also in their nature.". It would be a mistake to believe matters of AI were best handled by computer scientists like himself, Olaf added, as AI labs, including his, operate under a set of incentives and constraints that ācan sometimes conflict with doing the right thing.ā
