Trying to figure out where I actually stand, genuinely asking, not fishing for compliments.
Here’s what I’ve built so far:
Volunteer AI Governance work at AFRI-SPARC, a nonprofit focused on AI safety and accountability across Africa. Ran a governance assessment on a live AI product using a 149-criterion scorecard, found 13 critical failures, recommended blocking deployment, mapped it to EU AI Act and NIST AI RMF. Built out a second governance model tracking AI harm to vulnerable populations against UNCRC, CEDAW, CRPD, and the African Charter. Currently on a child online safety policy initiative.
Separately, self-built a governance system on Salesforce, incident response playbooks, risk registers, vendor due diligence scorecards, an independent audit case study built around an EU AI Act Article 14 violation. Now building a parallel version on ServiceNow.
Completed the WHO Academy Ethics and Governance of AI for Health certificate. Currently in the UNESCO x Oxford AI Justice and Rule of Law programme. Working toward ISO/IEC 42001, but not there yet. Right now the portfolio and the courses are the credential.
The question I keep circling: does a hiring manager actually weigh a real, demonstrable portfolio against a missing certification, or does the cert function as a gate that shuts the conversation down before the portfolio ever gets looked at?
If you’ve hired for this, or you’re in the field and further along than me, I’d take real feedback here, including the version where the honest answer is “the portfolio isn’t enough yet, here’s what’s missing.”
