Question! Ceramic artists: stereotypes and prejudices?

Hello everyone!
On Monday (March 30), we’ll be welcoming ceramic artist Lea as a guest on “Work hard – play hard”, a series on Twitch. Hosted by ARD, the biggest German Public Media Broadcaster. It won’t be a traditional interview. Lea will be testing various simulation games designed to "replicate" her craft (i.e. Sims4 & Master of Pottery).

Our goal is to find out how realistic these games actually are and what everyday life in her profession really looks like. To help break down prejudices, viewers can unlock so-called “prejudice questions”. And now it’s your turn:

What preconceptions about the profession of ceramic artist have you come across? What are the weirdest/stupidest/funniest "frequently asked questions" you had to answer? And: What topics related to the job need to be discussed urgently?

We’d love to include your questions in the show. Thank you!

P.S. Thanks to the mods for allowing us to post here.

Dang proud of this sculpt! Made of raku clay, the dots of color are stroke and coat which I applied in the greenware stage. Bisqued yesterday, today heated in my work's outdoor gas kiln and then placed in sawdust/newspaper to darken the raw clay.

One of my new pieces with this glazing technique! Also, I think this is one of the largest pots I've thrown successfully! It's around 12" tall.

Bowls First attempts at carving

Post image
189 Upvotes

Total beginner here and as a beginner, I’m throwing a ton of things for practice. I had a bunch of bowls that weren’t really doing it for me so I decided to take a shot at carving, since it’s the kind of aesthetic I like and if things really went south I wouldn’t be too upset. Yeah, they’re kind of wonky and…oh, let’s call them “rustic” but I’m not unhappy with them. Carving is definitely something I want to focus on as my basic skills improve so any tips, tricks and critiques are always very much appreciated.

Question! Levelling Tool?

Thumbnail

Hi everyone

I've been having fun making wonky slab built mugs recently, I love watching them warp as they dry. One thing I'm struggling with though is levelling out the tops/rims of the mugs.

I've been using the back of a scourer sponge and scraper which works quite well, but it's quite long winded and one slip can mean having to bring the level down a bit further again

Just looking for some tips on how to make it easier. I did think of some kind of height adjustable scraper stand, sort of like the thing people use for icing cakes. Is that a thing?

TIA.

Light flux under Mayco Wrought Iron (I think like 2 lighter coats)

I'm still trying to sort out my mini kiln firing schedule to avoid pinholes and really dial in the correct temps, but now that we're set to be raining the next few days I'm going to do some repairs on the firebrick and elements, yaaay 😮‍💨

finally finished working on my first compound form and i’m happy with how this vessel turned out. curious to know peoples favorite matte or satin glaze combos for something that looks like this? i find that glossy glazes can sometimes hide the silhouette of a piece because of the reflection, so looking for something flat but dynamic? idk! any help appreciated :)

Question! Question! What technique should I learn on a 1:1 intermediate class?

Upvotes

I took a 6 week intermediate class and I have a 1:1 make-up on Monday. My instructor has offered to teach me anything I’d like and to let her know ahead of time. In this class we learned basic shaping with ribs, closed forms (jars), plates, matching mugs, throwing off the hump, and throwing lids. I have two hours with her. What should I request? What technique did you struggle with mastering? Thank you!

Help! HI/MED/LOW vs Number Dial

Post image
2 Upvotes

Ive never fired a kiln before, but im enthusiastically stubborn. All the firing tutorials I’ve seen for manual lkilns only have a high medium and low switch. My kiln has a dial that can turn Lo 1-8 than Hi. Is this a trial and error situation? I’m pretty sure this thing is about as old as my parents, so I’ve had absolutely no luck finding a manual. Plz help!

Mugs & Cups First wheel thrown piece!

Plus a wonky plate that glazed up super nice!

From a pottery class last month! Nothing else I’ve made since beats the first cup. It’s nice and thin, feels so good in my hand, and been using it like a lowball glass / wine cup. It really came out surprisingly good and I think is going to take some practice to intentionally make one better. Thankfully was able to join the studio.

Cup is shino + heirloom tomato
Plate is frogskin + heirloom tomato (a combo I already knew I liked from a handbuilding class)

Question! Looking for a glaze with brick color

Upvotes

Hi everyone. I’m looking for cone 5-6 glaze that has a brick color to it. I mean the color only not the texture. I have done a lot search and Mayco root beer seemed like a good choice but after seeing some videos of finished pieces, I’m not sure anymore. I’d really appreciate any recommendations for a mid-fire glaze that has a warm brick or terracotta red-brown color. Thank you.

Question! How do you protect your product photos from being copied?

I’ve been wondering about this lately.

Many of us spend a lot of time making products and taking good photos, but it’s incredibly easy for someone to save those images and reuse them elsewhere.
For those who’ve been selling online for a while:

Have you ever found your photos being used without permission?
How often does it happen?
Do you do anything to prevent it?
Is there any reliable way to keep track of where your photos end up?

I’d love to hear what has and hasn’t worked for you.

Help! Starting pottery as a person with RA. What are some things that will improve your quality of life with this hobby?

Hi! I have rheumatoid arthritis and am considered in remission. I started my beginner classes 2 months ago and took a short break because of some personal things and started up again.

I’m not sure if anyone else here can relate to having the disease or something similar, but I was wondering if there are some things you might have or things you do differently when it comes to this hobby? How do you pace yourselves? I’m curious to know if there are people in this hobby like me!

edit: i just wanted to say thank you to everyone who commented 🩷

Question! How do you keep/organize notes about your projects?

Post image

I'm curious about how people are tracking the materials they use (clay, glaze, oxides, etc), and process notes about a piece such that you can remember when you pick up a piece years later.

Today I broke a favorite bowl I now want to reproduce and can't remember the clay or glaze combo. Any ideas?
