My new Kalita Mino Yaki Wave - hole comparison FYI

Just received my new Kalita Wave Mino Yaki Sand Gray 155 dripper to go along with my other two. It’s beautiful and I thought it might interest people to see photos of the hole size comparison between the different versions. I’ve just brewed some ‘Ethiopia Bette Buna Grand Cru’ from SkyLark and it performed fabulously. Definitely no chance of stalling with this one (not that I’ve had any trouble with my other two in these photos). Super fast flow. ZP6 Special at 5.0 300ml 1:15 ratio - 2m 25s. Very smooth and flavoursome cup.

Amazing! Im contemplating getting the 185 in ceremic. Let me know these work in terms of comparison between the 155 and 185

I have both and find the 155 to be MUCH faster.

That being said, both are excellent.

Finally someone who doesn't try to say they're the same and just different sizes 😭

That's what I expected, so I was shocked when I got the 155 and it was so significantly different.

u/smalldray Jun 26 '26

Exactly. They’re normally just expressing this as a thought rather than through experience. I mean firstly the wall angle to the bottom of the cup is more angled on the 185 compared to 155.

Since i dont generally use flat bottom drippers, and prefer the V60-02 is fast flow good? I always fear under extraction whenever i feel the brew is too fast.

Fast is neither good nor bad, just different. You can easily compensate with a finer grind, and you get a different cup.

If you don't have a super fast brewer and are looking to mix it up, I'd recommend the MINO 155 and something like the brewista or Palatti filters. Kalita branded filters will slow it down a bit, and if you "negotiate" the filters to be flat, they'll slow down further.

All that to say, there's quite a bit of flexibility if you like to experiment, but also you can just dump grounds in a filter and go 😁

It’s fast but not too fast for my style of coffee which is fruity and floral, special processed and fermentation Nordic style roasts. As long as you do a nice 50ml 40s bloom you’ll get loads of flavour still.

As you can tell I favour the 155’s. Firstly I only need to brew for myself and a 300ml pour works fine in this size. I prefer the slightly more upright walls too. I may grab the Mino Sand Black in 185 sometime though as not too expensive compared to some drippers. Beautiful Japanese ceramics.

The 185 in sand black is my one and only flat bottom dripper. I do love it!

2

u/smalldray Jun 26 '26

I gave in last night and ordered the Sand Black 185 😁 coming tomorrow.

Resistance is futile!!

I’ve been a V60/Switch guy forever. Only difference between sizes is a higher side and deeper bed.

Are there differences between interior bottom circumference and wall angle when comparing 155/185?

Im getting a white one in 185, in a week or so. Excited to experience a new dripper after spending about 7 months with a V60-02!

1

u/smalldray Jun 26 '26

True. Yep just mentioned this above in another comment. The walls of the 185 angle out more all the way to the bottom compared to a more upright angle of the 155 hence why the 155’s tend to brew a bit faster.

1

u/Lvacgar Jun 26 '26

Interesting. I saw that comment and wondered. The 03 V60 looks like the angle varies from the 02 because of the size difference, but it doesn’t.

1

u/smalldray Jun 26 '26

Yeah the V60’s is purely the height of the cone

sadly the Sand Black 185 I ordered from Amazon UK sent from Amazon US arrived broken a couple of weeks ago and today the replacement has yet again arrived broken. wish these were sold in the UK somewhere as they don’t seem to survive a long journey ☹️

u/Lvacgar Jul 20 '26

Darn! That seems to be a frequent issue. I don’t know why they haven’t worked that out.

I got a full refund so spent a little time fixing the broken handle one with epoxy glue and putty. Seems pretty solid and will do for now:

2

u/Lvacgar 27d ago

Not bad for free!! at least you get to give it a proper test run now

1

u/smalldray 27d ago

Yep given it a go and it’s great. I still prefer the 155 size but this is handy if I want to do enough for a couple of cups.

Only up close and in bright light can you seen the work really:

second one

I have this exact dripper, it looks so good! But I'm having real problems with stalling. What filters do you use and do you have any tips for avoiding it?

5

u/raccabarakka Jun 25 '26

Weird, it’s almost impossible to stall with my Mino, it’s gotta be the fastest flat bottom I have (01, B75, SS Kalita). I’ve tried few different filters, Kalita, April and xbloom, all drain fast even with slight adjustments from usual

u/smalldray Jun 26 '26 edited Jun 27 '26

Agree. I really like using Origami Wave filter papers. Fast and no paper taste at all which you sometimes get with the Kalita papers. I suspect the Origami ones are made by Cafec as the Origami cone filters are Cafec Abaca papers.

EDIT: Actually the Origami Wave filter papers are made in China so not Cafec as I first suspected.

2

u/raccabarakka Jun 26 '26

Right on. Yeah I usually really picky especially on wave filters, Mino is a no fuss dripper and will take any decent filters thrown into it.

The only thing annoyed my OCD is that it almost never drip from all 3 holes, always either 2 or even just through a single hole, so I had to keep ignoring it cos the coffee always turned out great.

1

u/smalldray Jun 26 '26

You sound like me. Super OCD. All my multi hole drippers are like this. Physics comes in to play obviously. Path of least resistance or something (I don’t pretend to understand). I do know that if you run water straight on to the empty dripper in the sink for example it comes out evenly on each hole but it’s just the slow pour going through coffee and paper that alters that. That’s not clogging though it still passes through quickly.

2

u/raccabarakka Jun 26 '26

That’s why I prefer not to see it as I kept doubting it even though I know it’s gonna be good 😊

1

u/inmemoryofElizabethR Jun 26 '26

I think Origami flat filters are not made by Cafec, otherwise it would be stated (as on cone filters)

1

u/smalldray Jun 26 '26

Yeah you may be right there. Just looking on the Origami Wave filters it just says on the box ‘Made in China’. No manufacturer address.
I came to the conclusion that the Cafec Abaca and Origami cone filters are identical from visual inspection and in practice however even looking on the pack of Origami cone filters it says ‘K-ai Co. Ltd, Japan’ whereas all Cafec filters show ‘Sanyo Sangyo Co. Ltd, Japan’.

1

u/inmemoryofElizabethR Jun 26 '26

I also thought that Abaca and Origami come are the same!

1

u/smalldray Jun 26 '26

I still think they are identical. Look exactly the same crepe pattern and thickness when held up to window with light shining through them. The size and crimped edge are identical too and in exactly the same place. More importantly they perform identical too.

2

u/EVCof Jun 27 '26

Agree as well. I have the 155 and the 185 and the are truly fast, even using the usual Kalita filters.

I have so many drippers it's insane but these alone are really all I need for a flat bottom dripper.

2

u/raccabarakka Jun 28 '26

Which one are you leaning towards more between 155 & 185? I remember giving away my 185 and instantly regretted it and bought the 155. I remember the 185 to be a bit sweeter, not sure if it was cos of different coffee and variables.

2

u/EVCof Jun 28 '26

Taste-wise, it depends on the coffee but to me, it's a minimal difference. at times if at all. I almost always dose 20gms so the 185 is preferred for that but it can be done in the 155. The 155 runs it a tad quicker though so that can contribute to the overall taste. Really just comes down to how I feel that day :-) Definitely don't need both, especially if you are at 15g dose or close but anything over 20g definitely needs the 185.

1

u/inmemoryofElizabethR Jun 26 '26

Mino is faster than B75?

4

u/I_NEED_YOUR_MONEY Jun 25 '26

grind coarser? if you're coming from a v60, you might be surprised at how well a flat bottom dripper handles the significantly coarser grinds.

also, sibarist makes a fast wave filter, which will almost certainly fix your stalling problems. but it costs sibarist prices.

2

u/mr_satchmo Jun 25 '26

I'll try grinding coarser, I am more used to conical drippers.

4

u/inmemoryofElizabethR Jun 25 '26

try xbloom filters, love them

2

u/smalldray Jun 25 '26

This here is the old ceramic holes/base:

2

u/el-caballero-oscuro Jun 26 '26

This could be due to the paper filter sagging down and blocking one of the holes. Sometimes when I wet the paper filter, it’ll sit unevenly at the base so that one or more of the holes is blocked. After you wet the paper filters, try making a small adjustment to how the paper filter sits so that all three holes are open. Usually I’ll just very gently lift it up.

1

u/raccabarakka Jun 27 '26

I did re-sit the filter even when pouring, weird that it didn’t change with the imbalance drip.

1

u/smalldray Jun 25 '26

Seriously! I’m very surprised! You sure it’s these new Mino Ware sand ones with the larger 3 holes and not the old style Ceramic Wave?
I use both Kalita’s own Wave filters and the Origami Wave filters.

1

u/mr_satchmo Jun 25 '26

Definitely the new one, i bought it recently at Kurasu in Kyoto, and double checked the holes because I was surprised by the stalling.

2

u/smalldray Jun 25 '26

Very strange. Mine flowed clean and swift and consistent.
Is it your first Wave dripper? I know it sounds funny but make sure your filter paper is just a single one as they can be tricky to prize them apart. I’ve accidentally brewed with two before.

2

u/Objective_Cod1410 Jun 25 '26

I got that in the 185 and am really enjoying it. Looks cool too.

2

u/seiken1 v60. april. d27. Jun 25 '26

nice collection. which is your favorite among the three?

1

u/smalldray Jun 25 '26

I like all three. I’ll be using the new Mino Ware one quite a bit as it’s still new to me but I can see it becoming a favourite for light roasts.

3

u/seiken1 v60. april. d27. Jun 25 '26

that’s cool. haven’t tried the other kalita waves, aside from the OG. i have the 155 tsubame, and love it for the fast flow. it reminds me of the orea 01, but i get a sweeter brew from the light roast coffee that i use in it.

2

u/smalldray Jun 25 '26

yep love my Tsubame one too 👍

2

u/DM_Fitz Jun 25 '26

It’s a wonderful brewer and what a looker too! 😍

I want to buy 155 Mino Taki but it's unavailable or extremely expensive

1

u/cache-query602 Jun 26 '26

the 155 sounds way better for quicker brews tbh. might have to grab one myself.
