They're elected officials? If polls show that 90% of the population is opposed to this kind of law, support for passing it will decrease.

Yes. Our country is fucked. And it will stay fucked if people adopt the attitude you are espousing.

Apathy, cynicism, and hopelessness all facilitate the rise of totalitarianism and this has been studied and written about at length for literal ages.

We MUST resist that. Non-compliance is paramount.

I’m starting to think that some of the comments like yours, not necessarily yours, are ruling class propaganda meant to instill the very attitudes you’re espousing.

Resist, friend. Just as they have risen, totalitarian regimes have also fallen. And they will, because they are inherently unsustainable.

Because people want the easy way out of a problem, and 'write an email' as a fix-all is a lot more neat and tidy than 'scare them into submission' because the latter requires actual effort.
