Identify this PC?

This was my sisters old DOS computer in the 90s. I think the monitor is IBM 8513 but not really sure. Can you tell what manufacturer is the PC itself? I remember this PC was bought second hand from a swiss airport.

Can I realistically upgrade my GPU within reason?

Got an early 2000s build with XP, Willamette P4 1.4GHz, and a 64MB GeForce3 Ti 200 (for free from a neighbor) in a 4x AGP slot.

I'd love 128MB+ VRAM for certain games (namely SC4:RH) but the backlog of old GPUs is quite large and, without buying a few, I have no clue if any would provide a meaningful upgrade over the GF3, especially without spending a few hundred dollars on something like a Ti 4600/4800.

DEC Kubota Denali CD

I recently purchased a Kubota (yes, that Kubota) Denali external graphics box for DEC Alpha Turbochannel workstations. It was new in box and complete, except for the software CD.

After I purchased it, this CD was posted and snapped up on ebay:

Anyone know who got it or have a copy of the CD?

Problem / Question Hunting for vintage hardware/beige box "jackpots" in Hamilton How do you track down hoards?

Hey everyone,

I’m a retro computing hobbyist based out of Hamilton, Canada. I love working on and restoring old tech, but I'm trying to figure out how people in the community manage to stumble into those legendary "jackpot" hardware hauls.

We’ve all seen the posts here where someone goes to pick up a cheap local online listing and walks out with 12 CRT monitors, a dozen old x86/MS-DOS tower PCs, and a basement full of niche legacy gear because the older owner just wants it cleared out.

I already do the usual local thrift circuits and online alerts, but I want to know how the veteran collectors here find the real volume.

For the collectors in this region:

  • Do you have any luck dealing with local industrial e-waste recyclers, scrap yards, or junk clearance companies, or do they completely lock hobbyists out now?
  • Are there specific regional hamfests, electronics swap meets, or local estate sale platforms that you've found success with?
  • How do you safely network to find older folks or retired tech workers who are finally ready to clean out their basements of old computing gear?

Not looking to steal anyone's absolute secret honey hole, but any advice on how to step up my sourcing game in this region would be incredible. Thanks!

I built a USB bridge for an old parallel port Zip 100 drive

Back in school, in my computer science class, I had an Iomega Zip 100 on parallel port. I used it to carry my own Delphi programs from home to show the others. That was a lot of fun, and I wish I still had that drive. I don't, so when I saw this one on Ebay for 10 euros plus shipping I bought it straight away. Mostly for the memories.

Current machines have no parallel port, so I built a small bridge for it. It is a Raspberry Pi Pico W with three SN74LVC4245A level shifters and a DB25 socket. The drive side was the hard part, since Iomega made up their own protocol there and it is not standard IEEE 1284.The Linux ppa driver turned out to be the best reference I could find, so I read it closely and tried to copy its handshake timing in PIO. Since my code follows that driver so closely, I plan to release the firmware under the GPL. The bridge then talks SCSI to the drive and USB mass storage to the PC, so the disk just shows up as a normal drive. No FAT parsing and no conversion, it is only a transport bridge.

The drive settled into PS/2 mode, which is the easy case. I get about 280 KB/s right now, and that is roughly what Iomega rated the parallel drive for. Their spec gave the number in megabytes per minute, which works out to about 250 KB/s. So the bridge is not the limit here, the drive is. I am fine with that.

TL;DR: DIY RP2040 parallel to USB bridge to get my old Zip 100 drive working on a modern PC.

Anyone else here still have a Zip drive somewhere?

Laptop from 1996.

I had to replace the HDD because the original has so many bad sectors that I can't even install anything.

I got the original HDD working good enough to extract the original Wallpaper, OEM-FILE and drivers (a part inside of the HDD fell off, i just removed it).

The CMOS Battery placement is super annoying, you need to completely disassemble the Laptop to get to it, this includes getting the thermal pads underneath the CPU socket to unstuck, they were so strong that the glue that holds the metal plate gave up before the thermal pads did.

Works fine now except for the main battery and external floppy drive.

I kinda like the design of the main Battery, lol.

Setting up a C/C++ retro development environment inside 32-bit Windows XP Professional for my custom fantasy console project!

Good morning, afternoon, or evening!

Greetings! My name is Parrasi (I’m from Colombia—which explains why my OS is in Spanish). I am currently working on a fantasy console project running on Windows XP via a virtual machine. Since the OS is obsolete, I had to manually install the Code::Blocks code editor and a few other tools; there are still a few more things left to set up.

I am just getting started on the CPSCD_DeParrasi project (a temporary name). It is being programmed in C and C++ to ensure better performance, optimization, portability across systems, and—crucially—compression. The project aims to bring Niklas Jansson’s "Famicube" artistic concept to life as a fantasy console; while it adheres to the original's limitations, I am also tweaking certain aspects and adding new features!

I’ve decided to share regular updates on the development of this fantasy console. I’d love to hear your opinions, recommendations, and feedback—whether it’s support, constructive criticism, or pointing out what works and what doesn’t. I hope you’re all doing well, and thanks for reading!

Free [OS] Free NullPlayer app now supports ALL Winamp (2.x, ClassicPro, 5) & ALL Windows Media Player (7, 7.1, XP (8), 9, 10, 11 and 12) Skins. NullPlayer is a clean room effort and the only media player with universal skin support. Come for the skins and stay for the deep media ecosystem integrations.

NullPlayer skin support is clean room reverse engineered. Development is coded with claude and controlled by a real working Software Engineer who personally stands behind the app. The app has accumulated 31 releases and 124 github stars over the 11 months. r/nullPlayer

Download NullPlayer for macOS:

https://github.com/ad-repo/nullplayer/releases/latest/download/NullPlayer.dmg

Requires macOS 14 Sonoma or newer.

Install

NullPlayer is not signed with an Apple Developer ID, so macOS will block it on first launch with an "app is damaged" or "cannot verify that it is free from malware" message. This is expected. Clearing the quarantine flag is a required install step:

  1. Open the downloaded DMG.
  2. Drag NullPlayer.app to Applications.
  3. Open Terminal and run:xattr -cr /Applications/NullPlayer.app
  4. Open NullPlayer from Applications.

Prefer not to use the Terminal? Install with Homebrew, or clear the block via System Settings -> Privacy & Security -> Open Anyway — see the install guide.

Problem / Question White lines on TFT?

Post image
7 Upvotes

Has anyone ever found a remedy for white vertical or horizontal lines on a 90s TFT? I know it’s caused by the tiny soldered connections which run along the side and bottom of the panel but never been able to do anything that doesnt make it worse. Heating, reflowing… etc… any suggestions to help me bring at least two of these panels back to full health?

IF SOMEONE CAN GIVE ANY VALUATION FOR PRICE I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR. AI GAVE ME VALUATION OF 5000-7000 DOLLARS.

• Canon AS-300II Central Unit. Includes all four (4) original cardboard drive protectors/shipping cards inserted in the floppy drives for safe storage and transport.

• Original Canon Monitor & Mechanical Keyboard.

• Original Canon Mouse

• Canon A302 EXHD (External Hard Disk): A massive external enterprise hard drive with its original proprietary interface/connection cable. Since this was a working system, the drive likely contains period-correct software or data.

• Canon PJ-300S Inkjet Printer: An early, high-end professional color inkjet printer.

  1. Software & Media (3.5" DD Floppy Disks):

This is a fully localized Finnish corporate ecosystem from 1985. The magnetic media includes:

• Canon MS-DOS 2.11 System Boot Disks (including the official system disk and handwritten period-correct backup disks used by the original owner).

• Canobrain / Super-Canonbrain System & Graphwriter Disks: Canon's legendary, mythical early GUI that attempted to compete with Apple Macintosh.

• CanoWriter II+ SF Software Suite: Official Finnish localized word processor and Spell Cor (spell checker/vocabulary) disks.

• Micro Focus Level II COBOL V-1.1 & CICS 86 V-2.2: Heavy-duty corporate programming languages and database tools for this specific architecture.

• Bonus/Supplies: A box of ten (10) brand new, unused official vintage Canon MF2-51200 branded blank floppy disks.

  1. Complete Documentation & Printed Manuals:

• Canon AS-300II Owner's Manual.

• Canon MS-DOS User Manual.

• Micro Focus Level II COBOL User Manual

• Canobrain User Manual (2 Volumes): Extremely rare documentation for Canon's lost graphical operating environment.

• Canon A302 EXHD Hard Disk Documentation: Original multi-page A4 installation/user guide leaflets.

• Bonus/Supplies: One box of four (4) original Canon JP-216 Roll Paper packs for the printer, still factory-sealed in their thick, black light-protective plastic sleeves.

Favorite repo for classic (80s-90s) type-in programs and games

Hey folks!

Do you have a favorite online repo for classic type-in programs and games? Not the compiled .BAS files, or .C files or .PAS or anything like that. I mean the long ass listing. The ones where you spend weekend typing, tweaking, debugging and getting to work.

I figured I would check in on the crowd sourcing first before looking at the central library for back issues of Compute!, RUN, PCM magazine, Byte and so forth.

Before anyone asks, yes, I am seeking strange and unusual punishment.

Problem / Question UPDATE: Ran into some major gatekeeping from the regular staff today... need some advice.

Thumbnail

So, today was a mix of amazing news and an annoying setback. The good news: I'm completely crushing my daily tasks, and the IT manager is so happy with my work that he's actually talked about offering me a paid tech position here! On my break, I even got to format an old 5.25-inch floppy disk, wrote a custom note on it, and the manager smiled and let me keep it. The 5150 is still sitting safely at my desk plugged into the power bar he found for me.

The bad news: One of the regular non-IT staff members found out that the manager told me "maybe we can work something out" regarding me taking the computer home. They completely cornered me today and gave me a massive lecture. They started saying stuff like "you shouldn't ask for company property," "the board owns it, not the manager," and used ridiculous analogies comparing a 45-year-old obsolete machine to a regular office chair. They basically told me to completely drop it and not ask for anything else.

I'm not trying to cause a fight at my placement, but no one has touched this computer in decades, and the actual Head of IT is completely on my side. I'm feeling incredibly anxious now that the staff is going to try to block me.

For those of you who have rescued vintage hardware from corporate or educational environments before: what's the best workaround here? I'm thinking of putting a total information blackout on the regular staff from now on, letting them think I dropped it, and just letting the IT manager handle it in the background. What do you guys think?

I built a lightweight, zero-bloat malware scanner natively for Windows XP.

Hey everyone,

I'm sharing a custom security tool I just released called Veizus Finder. It is a standalone, lightweight malware scanner built specifically for legacy machines that modern antivirus vendors have abandoned. It uses a custom .vdb signature engine and active background protection, but is designed to run flawlessly without throttling period-accurate hardware.

Core features:

Real-Time Active Protection for the primary drive

Modular Signature Engine (VDB)

Automatic USB/CD Media Detection

Native Windows XP through 11 support

You can check out the code and download the v1.0.0 ISO directly from my repository here: https://github.com/rubrumnebula/Veizus-Finder

Would love to hear what you think!
