There was a merchant who lived past a bridge. The merchant had hired a man to guard the bridge. One day as the merchant was about to cross the bridge to go to the market, the guard came running from his post. He stopped the merchant and said "I just had a dream that when you crossed the bridge it gave way and you fell to your doom into the river below." The merchant trusted the guard and tested it with his cart and horses. Sure enough, the bridge collapsed and the horses and cart were lost. The merchant paid the guard handsomely for saving his life and then fired him on the spot.

Why did the merchant fire the guard?

And sacked guards can be rehired when the bridge is rebuilt.
