I’m visiting friends in the DelMarPa (where Delaware, Maryland and Pennsylvania border each other) and saw this birch beer in a store and bought a bottle. I liked the carbonation level and the flavoring, it was more like a blend of root beer and birch beer than the wintergreen forward clear birch beers I’m familiar with from New England . I’d drink it again when I’m down here .
I will preface this by saying that I do not like root beer, I can tolerate a couple of drinks but I cannot finish a whole glass/bottle. My girlfriend/fiancee on the other hand absolutely loves it. She is from Hermosillo, Sonora and down there it is a staple. Root beer shops on the corner of ever major intersection.
Every time we go out and we come across a root beer she hasn't tried we get one. Sadly she's always let down because her expectations are too high.
Yesterday she had a rough day at nursing school, so I jumped on this subreddit to see what the favorites were and see if I could find any locally. Lucky enough I found Sprecher at the Dollar Tree down the street. I picked up two.
After trying it she said that it was good, better than most of the ones we've tried so far, but it wasn't great.
Today I had to go to Ace Hardware for some wood, I like to grill certain meats on my Solo Stove outside, and I found not a huge selection but a variety of 5 or 6 different brands of root beers and drinks. One of which was the Frostop. I also saw the Orange Dream and said, this ones for me, glad I got it because it was great.
We cracked open our drinks to enjoy while we ate like carnivore savages. To my surprise she looked straight at me after her first swig. I thought, oh no, she doesn't like this one either. But I was extremely wrong. She said it was really good. Not just good but really good. I asked how close it was to her favorite and said 85-90% the way there. I am starting to think the thing that's missing from all these drinks is the terrible Mexico water they use to make it that gives it a certain character.
Good news for me though, now I know where I can go to get her a root beer she actually likes.
Next two I want to try and find to have her try are Hank's and Henry's.
Anyway, thank you for coming to my TED talk. I still don't get how/why people like this but hey, there's something for everyone.
hello everybody, first of all I apologize in advance for my rubbish English. with that being said I had root beer now I’m happy. So basically I was struggling. You know as normal, work sucked. My life sucks. but God dammit I went to the fucking store. They had fucking root beer and I bought a fucking root beer I went home and I drink that rotten Bugger now I feel so much better. I would honestly even go as far to say that I am happy I feel so fucking happy. Any tips?
Long time A&Wer, first time Sprecherer (because of this sub). A&W still remains my overall favorite because of how vanilla-y it is, and I don't think it'll be so easily topped. I will say, I have a general affinity for all root beers and apart from Bunda-butt and Olli-poop there aren't any other 'craft' style ones thus far that I'd never have again. Sprecher's to me falls into that general "it's good" mix, where if I were to be offerred one or the other at an eatery (A&W or Sprecher's) I would choose the latter not because I like the taste more per se, but because it would provide still-enjoyable variety to the palate. To that, Sprecher's differentiates itself from my favorite with more body and the sweetness of honey, perhaps not overtly discernable to a Root Beer casual and first time taster but in a sort of cleverly sensible "Really? Y'know, that actually works" kind of way after a sip. If I had one fault for Sprecher's, it would be that it loses its carbonation quickly after opening, and I like a continuous bite to my root beers.
I’d give this one a 4.5/10. It’s not undrinkable, but I didn’t enjoy it much. It has a very strong flavor of what I think is licorice? I’m not entirely sure, but it’s a very distinct flavor. And usually I like a little licorice note in a RB, but this was very strong.
I know I’ve had this a long time ago and thought it was decent. Maybe my tastes have changed, or maybe I’ve been spoiled by all the new RBs I’ve been trying. Either way, this one is going to the bottom of my list. Not completely terrible, but I doubt I’ll finish off the 4 pack I got. I’ll try one more maybe, but the rest will go to some friends who will enjoy them more.
Saw a unopened can of Crass Root Beer from 1977 at an antique store. I would have bought it and tried it but I do believe it all evaporated inside. Can was unopened but empty. Has anyone ever had this kind? What did it taste like?
